Deja vu
My grandson has had a non cancerous brain tumor removed about 10 yrs ago. Now he has another that they been watching for about 2yrs now. No treatment needed as long as tumor doesn't start growing, but now he has had daily episodes of deja vu for about 4 mos...eeg was negative for seizures so they think it's anxiety. Has anyone had a similar experience like this?

How long do his déjà vu focal aware seizures last?
Was your grandson experiencing Déjà vu activity during his EEG?
Does he normally have anxiety issues? Do you believe the anxiety diagnosis?

2 Reactions@jakedduck1 they only last about a minute. Yes but they were really mild. He's fine until he has his deja vu episodes and then he gets tired, headache, anxiety. Never had anxiety before. I don't believe it's anxiety. I read where if the seizures are too mild are to deep that you will get a false negative and that lots of people get dismissed and told it's anxiety and then later find out it's seizures. Going to get a 2nd opinion because he has all the symptoms of awareness focal lobe seizures

4 ReactionsHi @debra54!
I believe this is the first time we've had the chance to interact directly. Welcome to our group at Connect!
At 5 years of age, I had an accident and was in a coma for 10 days. All seemed fine after I was conscious again, but in my teenage years, when hormonal changes took place, I started to experience what today I know are auras (focal aware seizures). I'd had many regular EEGs in my teenage years, and all were negative for epileptiform waves or seizures, just like your grandson. It was only much later, when my auras evolved to more severe complex partial seizures and I underwent sleep deprivation for an EEG, that I got the diagnosis of temporal lobe epilepsy and later a very mild mesial temporal sclerosis on my left hippocampus. After being diagnosed with epilepsy, I learned that a clean EEG doesn't exempt one from having epilepsy — it just means that by the time the EEG was performed, no epileptiform waves were detected.
So based on my own experience, I believe it'd be wise to seek another opinion.
Has your grandson been put through sleep deprivation for his EEGs? May I ask how old he is today?
Chris

3 ReactionsHi @debra54
One thing I'd also like to add — in my own auras, I experience déjà vu as well as strange smells and tastes in my mouth.
Here are some common symptoms people experience during auras, compiled by the Epilepsy Foundation — it may help your grandson recognize and describe what's happening to him:
Focal Preserved Consciousness Seizures (Simple Partial Seizures)

Does he also have any other symptoms besides the déjà vu experiences?
