What is the major difference between pregabalin and gabapentin?

Posted by mikead63 @mikead63, Apr 18, 2025

I have idiopathic peripheral neuropathy (diagnosed in January of this year). I was prescribed gabapentin 2-3 hours before bedtime. At this point I am at 600mg which helps while I know it's a low dose for many, at this point it's fine for me. I had not heard of pregabalin until today when I was researching info. in Pharmacy Times. I know that pregabalin is quickly absorbed while gabapentin is absorbed around 3 hours post dose. My question is: IS ANYONE ON PREGABALIN? If so, how is that working out??

I just came across this comment of yours.
I too have burning mouth syndrome. Has taking pregabalin helped you for this problem?

Yes, it definitely has although I had to find the right level....150 mg 2xday. I also take duloxotine at night...... I sleep extremely well.

I am on pregabalin (150 mg 2xday) and it works well for me. I also take duloxotine at night. That helps me sleep really well.

GabaPentin is less expensive for sure.

I have the same diagnosis as you. I was put on generic of Lyrica & Cymbalta unfortunately the Cymbalta made my slight tremors horrific. Taking 400 mg of Lyrica and working to reduce this to 200. The pain was very bad and I had a spinal stimulator put in and it is helping early days with the stimulator, time will tell. Lyrica has caused significant weight gain 15 lbs in 4 months (less activity as well due to pain). Using Metformin to help with weight gain every medication has side effects. More to my journey as all of us have a different journey. Not much fun for a previously active guy.

When starting LDN your dosing begins at 1.5mg for ten days and then increases 1mg every 10 days till you reach 4.5mg when you stay at that level. A higher dose is not recommended or needed.

I have been on pregablin for about 5 months. I replaced my night time gabapentin with the pregablin and I have loved it. I take it with melatonin to take the edge off so I can go to sleep and it is working. I am going to ask about replacing all gabapentin with pregablin.

@jniz those medications can be brutal, I will not take them, 100 lb weight gain with gabapentin not to mention the swelling, it was absolutely miserable. gabapentin has also recently shown possibly dementia from taking it however, mire testing needs to be done . I am DONE. when I took it I would get lost going places that I had been many times before, that's simply not worth losing my life. Once you get dementia, it's over . Pharmaceuticals are not safe drugs (most of them) cymbalta increased my cholesterol as did dulocextine. And all antidepressants can do the same plus cause diabetes, high blood pressure, I got them all but luckily I was able to reverse them. I also have cardiovascular issues so those side effects would have eventually killed me . so sorry you're dealing with all this... Wishing you the best 😊

@solobeee1 I tried the LDN as well several years ago but unfortunately it didn't work me, it increased my anxiety and caused me more nerve pain (I also have fibromyalgia) I so wanted the LDN to work as it is relatively inexpensive and low side effects. my friend takes it and helps her a lot . Hope it works out for you . It probably will. I couldn't even tolerate . 5 mg

Hi, I am 84, tried gabapentin over 12 years ago, didn't do much. Switched to gabapentin, and it has been very effective, no problem sleeping at all, and although my feet, particularly the soles are very tender, and feel very hot when walking, I can bear it.. My biggest problem is I also have bone on bone in both knees, and because of heart failure and AFib cannot get an operation. To top it all off, lower arteries in calves are again somewhat clogged, so from the knees down my legs feel like they are made of cement, with pain in calves and hot feet. I would really have a hard time but for the pregabalin. Hope that helps Terry
