HRT Safety

Posted by debbie1956 @debbie1956, Jun 8, 2024

I wanted to share this Medscape article I received today about new study on HRT. I am considering HRT for my osteoporosis at age 67 and am so encouraged by this article: https://www.medscape.com/s/viewarticle/hormone-therapy-after-65-good-option-most-women-2024a10007b2

@dvargo , Would you mind sharing what type of machine your bmd was measured on? Was it a DEXA or REMS? I had a similar gain on BHRT after one year measured on a REMS, so am curious to know if a DEXA would show similar results.

@debbie1956 I did the Rems last year, spine -2.9. This year Rems -2.4. I have a dexa this fall to see the difference. I am told Rems is more accurate.

I am 54 and have been on HRT for over a decade. My dexa scores have drastically declined. I am now a -4.4 in my spine and -3.1 in my hip. I have taken other osteoporosis meds in the past and have just had my first dose of evenity. My doctor said that because I went into early menopause at 38 and because my mom has osteoporosis, is why I have it. I tried to go off osteo meds for a while and just do HRT, strength training, supplements and diet. It did not work and now I am paying the price.

@bumblegal So sorry to hear the HRT hasn’t worked to at least stop the decline. I hope the Evenity helps and there are minimal side effects.

@debbie1956, HRT (estrogen) is well known to have a positive effect on bone density - many clinical studies show an average increase of about 2-6% (as measured by DXA scan) at various sites over the first 1-2yrs. Hope your DXA shows a similar trend to what you're seeing on REMs!

@dvargo This is very affirming for my own numbers and strongly supports that my increase was valid. My numbers were very similar to yours on the REMS going from spine T score -3 to -2.6 in one year. I I've been thinking for the past year that this was about a 5% increase, (math is not my forte) but just realized it would actually be a 13.33% increase which is very significant comparable to OP medications. Your increase was even higher, the HRT can really make a positive difference!

@debbie1956 Just think if we were put on HRT at 54 when menopause started we would have no bone loss. Dr. Marty Makary with NIH says this is the largest disservice to women in our lifetime. The women's health was flawed. This is why they took the black box warning off estrogen this year.

@dvargo

I still go through short bursts of anger when I acknowledge what we women have lost.

@gravity3 We can regain what the locust has eaten. Always have faith. There is a place for bone drugs, but we should always try the natural way first. The bone drugs make the quality of your bones worse.

I appreciate that these are your values and beliefs. I do not share them. On this forum I believe that it is important to refrain from telling others what to do. We are each individuals with unique stories and medical histories. We each have to create our own paths.

@gravity3 A orthopedic surgeon told me that. Yes, everyone has different health issues and they need to do the due diligence in research.

@dvargo Yes, it certainly was a profound disservice to women with life-altering consequences for thousands. When I saw how immediately my body responded to HRT, even 13 years post menopause, I have little doubt that HRT therapy started 13 years ago would have prevented this devastating disease. It is a travesty that the WHI erroneous conclusions remained unchallenged until recently for a whole generation of women.
