Colostomy: I hate this thing!

I have a low rectal tumor that I'm going to have to get a resection for and I'm super nervous about how to care for the ostomy and still have an active life. But you mentioning the bathroom thing helps me to see the bright side of getting this. I know it's going to be a big change, do you have any advice on how to care for it on the go or products you use for yours?
Welcome to Mayo Connect, @dgroves0430 ! And welcome to the club that no one wants to join. I'm sure there will be folks along with colostomy specific advice, but for now, I have an ileostomy and I do a lot of travel, and I scuba dive, hike, cycle, swim, and work out in the gym. The Ostomy and J-Pouch blog has some ariticles that may help get you started.
We also have a virtual support group you can call into. Its run by one of the Mayo WOCN's and its a great place to ask questions. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 4pm Arizona Time.

@dgroves0430 I use a Hollister two closed end Hollister bag and flange. I change both parts everyday. I just feel cleaner that way. I have had a few leaks over the last two years. I use the extender strips on the bottom part of the flange. The extra coverage really helps. I always carry a small bag of supplies with me at all times. Wearing a bag that gets tossed away is easy to deal with when you’re away from home. I am a very active person. The ostomy doesn’t stop me. I wish you the very best.

2 Reactions@rioa21 thank you so much! I'm a little lost when it comes to all the options so I def appreciate you for being specific. At least I feel a little more educated when it comes to this. I'm just so nervous about how I'm going to handle everything.
@susanf8 thank you so much! I saw the meeting so I have it added to my calendar, I'm really grateful there's a support group and lots of info because I'm a little lost when it comes to all of this.
@dgroves0430 I use comfort Medical if your insurance pays for part or all they help you decide what you need and it comes right to your door they have free samples I've use them for over a year and there great give them a call.
I hate mine but it's better than having surgery again.
i use a coloplast mio flex one piece closed end ostomy bag so I just remove entire bag and throw it away. Clean the area and put a clean bag on I feel much cleaner this way and I only have one piece to deal with The only time I have a leak is if my output pancakes so I do watch what I eat Coloplast will send you samples to try Im 87 and have had surgery for 2 years I try to make it as simple as possible I too also carry a change of supplies with me when I go out but I have only had to use it once Im just not brave enough to go without it. You will get into a routine that suits you and it will get much easier
