Periodic dizziness, fainting and feeling like passing out

Posted by rjtx @rjtx, Apr 26, 2021

I wonder if this is even the right forum? Please point out the right one if it's not. My wife (age 52) has had this symptom many years. She would feel dizzy, faint and almost passing out (not to a point to lose consciousness completely yet). But when it comes, it's pretty severe and she feel she would pass out. This happens every a few months. She has gone MRI for brain and blood testing. All test numbers are normal (except low Iron). She has been taking Iron pills and try to raise her number. Other than Iron, what kind of tests should we ask doctor to further diagnose?

@jamessaxo What kjoed53 said is many times the culprit. I also collapsed after urinating when I got out of bed to relieve the urge to urinate. Culprit dehydration. Called 911. Hospital visit to emergency room proved that. They did IV to replace fluids.

Thanks for that Barbara.
I foolishly took 12.5 mg losartan in the evening on top of the morning pill. Not a good idea to double medicine.

@chucklesg exactly why I get my dizzy and passing out spells. I get them cause I need a little sugar. I eat a high protein no sugar diet

@hjonker123 My husband had that feeling- took a few visits to determine it was his heart- then had a fwe other procedures before getting a pacemaker. Please see a cardiologist if you haven't already.

About 9 yrs ago, I was diagnosed with orthostatic hypotension (bp dropping upon standing from sitting or lying position). Previously, I had episodes of passing out in middle of night in bathroom, every 5 yrs for 20 yrs! This has been eliminated by making sure to not get dehydrated…no meds needed.

I collapsed after stepping out of toilet after urinating. I had taken a 2nd blood pressure pill. Got too low.

Several years have passed since I wrote that last post about dizzy spells and fainting. I’ve now conquered the IBS diagnosis (No meds. Just a simple low-sugar bran muffin, a small serving of bran flakes with 2% lactose free milk, 1 orange and coffee each morning). My passing out episodes have dramatically decreased and were ultimately found to be caused by AFib. Feeling much better these days, at nearly 91 years of age!

@kjoed53 I got all the way to a cardiologist because of this. Dehydration and too little salt in my diet.

@linza
Dehydration landed me in the ER with HR of 168 and a follow up with a cardiologist.
