Anyone had an anastomotic stricture at J pouch connection?

Posted by dmarr35 @dmarr35, Apr 11 8:22am

I have a J Pouch for 20 years I had to have a small section at the cuff removed and had the J Pouch reconnected. Ater a few months It formed a stricter and closed at the rectum. I could not poop so I had a Ileostomy made till I can find an answer to a fix. After 2 procedures my surgeon has not given me a plan or an answer. He tried using dilaters with no luck. I decided to make an appointment at the Mayo clinic to see if they can help. Just wondering if anyone had a similar problem. My J Pouch worked fine I’m hoping they can help and reconnect it. I’m looking Forword to a place where I can at least get communications and a plan.

@dmarr35 I had a structure at the anastomosis when I had a j-pouch. They were able to dilate it, though. It tended to tighten up and I needed to stretch it regularly. My pouch failed for other reasons eventually.

I hope you get a resolution to your problem! Let us know how it goes?

I developed structure at Jpouch anastomosis - repeatedly. Dilations never lasted. Moved to Arizona at retirement and transferred care to Mayo. There I met with Colorectal Surgery and Gastroenterology. I was evaluated and given information on all possible treatment options (dilations - medication - surgery). After considering everything I went with removal of the Jpouch, total proctocolectomy (Barbie butt) and a permanent ileostomy. It was the best decision because I have been free of pain and am able to live an active life. What I learned through the process of dealing with Crohn’s disease is there are many options and tools to help you … getting all the information is critical. I know you will be well-served by accessing the resources at Mayo - I know I was. Good luck to you on your journey.
