Teriparatide/Forteo

Posted by franmg @franmg, 3 days ago

Anyone have experience of taking teriparatide/Forteo? I had a bad experience with Prolia (osteonecrosis of the jaw, and resorbtion when I stopped it, which has led to awful DXA scan results (-3.6 in spine). My consultant has said teriparatide/Forteo is my best hope but, after the experience of Prolia, I am afraid. Especially the side effects of depression and insomnia. Any insight much appreciated

I didn’t have any problems with it. It’s the only one that I have taken that didn’t trouble with. I’m on Prolia now and it’s not horrible!

I started Forteo 5 Days ago.
I do my injection about a half hour before bedtime and I have not had any problems. Thank the good Lord!

I'm on it right now. It hasn't given me any insomnia, which I usually suffer from, but no changes. I had two or three days where I felt a bit weepy after three weeks, but it seems to have passed. I've had depression in the past, so that worried me too.

The jury is still out for me on Forteo. Had a rough time with Tymlos, and had to quit after 6 weeks. Forteo is very closely related, so I was not optimistic , but willing to try, since I had had a TIA last fall, making Evenity not an option. Forteo has given me none of the head rushes and rapid heartbeat or nausea that I had with Tymlos. I have had the fatigue and leg aches in the evenings, as I had with the Tymlos, though not quite as severe. I also have had a bad increase in my Restless Leg symptoms, so evenings are pretty lousy. I have just started my third month on the drug. I am hoping that these evening issues lessen over time, but will discuss it with my Endo. My -3.6 spine score makes this a tough decision.

I just started last night so I have a looong experience to speak from ....HA! I was preparing my start with just drinking extra water. So I was awake to use the bathroom a few times but I think I slept deeper and had no problems with anything else. I'm 74 and sleeping can be a bit of challenge usually but this did not interfere with my rest. I'm taking it at night to sleep through some of the effects others mention...like nausea or light headedness. I didn't experience any of that.
Forteo seems like the best choice for me. I like that it is a hormone that the body is already using and avoids some of the problems that the other choices have. It has also been used for some time now with faster success than the bisphosphonates.

@luckypup so good to hear it went well for your first night. Mine is Friday night. Hoping I’ll do okay! It’s great to hear everyone’s story. I feel positive about Forteo.

I also had that reaction from Prolia. It had been recommended after 24 months on Forteo, and I was told because of the Forteo, I healed well. I switched to Raloxifene for follow up to the forteo and now, 10 years later, fracture free, just now doing another 24 months follow up with Teriparatide. I feel it is one of the best bone building drugs on the market.

I took Teriparatide for the full 2 years and never had any issues at all. I gave myself the shot at night as recommended by the GYN. It just became part of the routine. When I traveled I used a small case with 2 ice packs that kept the Teriparatide cold. I didn’t want to have any interruption during the 2 years of treatment. The results were great.
After I finished the 2 years, I selected Raloxifene as the next treatment. This decision was based on Raloxifene being an estrogen receptor. Now I’m on HRT (6 months) at 69 yrs old. I took me 4 years to convince my GYN. I feel great, sleep well, my skin is improving and I’m less anxious. Hopefully the next scan will show improvements.

@hansens , hi. I just came off Forteo and did Reclast as my followup med. I'm also 69 and am interested in HRT. How did you convince your GYN. I'm having difficulty with that.
