Does anyone have a Bezoar in the belly because of slow motility?

Posted by rosy33 @rosy33, Apr 17 9:36am

I'm 87 and I've had Idiopathic Neuropathy for 20yrs which has progressed to full body. This past year I've developed a Bezoar in my belly because of slow motility which causes undigested food to gather like a ball in my abdomen. This causes bloat and stomach distention so much so that I look pregnant at 120 lbs. I've researched online and found that I was eating the complete opposite of what will help the Bezoar. I hate what it is and even the sound of the word. :

Hi, @rosy33 - developing a bezoar in your belly sounds horribly uncomfortable. Looking pregnant is never something that people tend to want if they are not actually expecting a child, it seems.

This Mayo Clinic page on gastroparesis talks about bezoars in its Complications section, saying:

Food that doesn't digest that hardens and stays in the stomach. This food can harden into a solid mass called a bezoar. Bezoars can cause nausea and vomiting. They may be life-threatening if they keep food from passing into the small intestine.

rosy33 - what is your doctor's recommendation to deal with the bezoar?

Hello @rosy33
How do you get officially diagnosed for slow motility? Im pretty sure I have it as I can go days without a bowel movement. I did not know of bezoars but am now terrified of it. Man this neuropathy is truely terrible with the multiple issues it can cause…..and Im told to not worry about it. Bloody hell.

@megidigo and all... I want to address the several days without your intestines moving. I had decades of diarrhea with stress or shopping or visiting with friends, or waking up!!!! Pretty yucky... then had a year+ of constipation that was a total shock. My docs gave me all the normal suggestions, none worked well for me and most caused additional bloating or issues.

I can take Milk of Magnesia if needed, but don't need it now.

I had a wonderful doc at Mayo suggest I try a different Probiotic than I was taking. I was using one from Walgreens, reputable I thought and didn't know much about Probiotics. Now I am better educated and thrilled I no longer have these issues. Amazing...

I take Probulin Colon Support Probiotic at bedtime daily. No more diarrhea and no more constipation. It is absolutely wonderful to have this resolved. Because my gut movement is so slow and have had these problems for so long, I added 1 capsule of the Probulin Women's Care UT probiotic every a.m. and I think it helps with UTI issues as well.

Also, I found when I had intestinal reactions to the frequent antibiotics I was taking, I added an additional Colon Support Probiotic and it stopped that problem, unless I actually had an allergy to the drug, which did happen. But, now, the additional Probiotic stops the bad reactions to antibiotic and allows me to complete the prescription.

I'm kind of proud of me for figuring that out! No docs considered it, so I spread the word to them and now they are finding it does help. Just another lesson learned and passing it along...

@lisalucier Sorry I didn't get back sooner. My doctor put me on a special diet which changed the complete way of how I eat. I just started 6 days ago and I feel so much better. My bezoar is in early stages so I have a good hold on it before it gets bigger. I feel much better as far as the bloat and distention goes, and I'm not uncomfortable after I eat. I have high hopes that it will dissolve and I can get back into size 10 pants.

Hi Meg,
Having neuropathy and bezoar is a double edge sword. I have a schedule that has worked for me within 6 days of following a special diet for bezore. I've had neuropathy for 25 years, it's idiopathic not diabetic. I've tried all kinds of meds and tests but I'm done with that because all I get is, they don't know what causes it and can't cure it. I just take vitamins and supplements. I make sure I stretch every morning and walk every day at least 20 minutes after each meal even if my feet hurt. I found some beautiful minamilist, barefoot sneakers that I can wear with less pain and feel the ground when I walk. I can even do a 15 second little happy dance!

Back to the bezoar, I don't have time right now but I promise to get back and tell you what I'm doing to handle both neuropathy and the bezoar. I can't believe how much better I feel with only 6 days in. Chat with you soon, Rosy

My daughter is a wellnes coach and she told me to take one tablespoon of olive oil one hour before breakfast. You can have a cup of black coffee to offset the taste which I don't mind at all. I started this one week ago and can't believe how much it works. It's best to use the dark olive oil with non-gmos. I've had chronic constipation as far back as I can remember, and tried everything. Olive oil together with the Bezore diet really got things moving. I wish a doctor told me this years ago, especially the gastro doc.

@rosy33 and all... This sounds wonderful! I wish I'd known about it several years ago. Does it cause loose stools if one is prone to diarrhea or has IBD with both diarrhea and constipation, or do you know the answer? I'm hesitant to try that at this stage of my game...

Blessings, Elizabeth
