lumbar pain

Posted by besmith57 @besmith57, 2 days ago

I have unbearable lumbar pain. I had a double fusion in 2022. I now have pain in my lower back. I have tried everything possible: injections, ablation, PT, lumbar massager, pain pump, etc. Both my pain dr and PT tech said I would have this pain forever. I can't live with this pain. I know this is a reach, but does anyone have a suggestion to help this pain go away? It has affected my quality of life immensely. Lots of tears! I just want to be pain-free! Maybe I'm asking for something that isn't possible. Any ideas would sure be appreciated. I love this site with all the knowledgeable, nice people! Thank you!

Degenerative discs. Thanks for asking.

I had a lumbar fusion also - 25 years ago! Now constant pain. I get Caudal Injections. That is the only thing that helps me. It is uncomfortable to get but I can walk after the injection. Mine last for about a year - other less than that. They go up your spinal column and when they come out the drop Cortisone- it almost reduces any swelling immediately. After a couple days I can actually put shoes on again. Worth a try

So sorry you have this horrific pain….i know zero about such things, but wonder if there is any kind of nerve block that you could get…I remember it being offered to a family cancer patient for extreme leg pain. Wishing you the best, way less pain !

@csbarry
Thank you for the suggestion. I'm going to the pain clinic this morning, so I will ask about it. I really appreciate it.

The pain doctor didn't really react to that suggestion. He tried to explain it, but didn't offer it. I may have had it since I've had so many different injections. He did suggest and schedule an injection that I have not had. I will have it on May 5th. He also said I have pinched nerves and stenosis. He never mentioned those conditions before. Guess I will have to wait until the 5th. Lots more ibuprofen. LOL

besmith57, your description seems to focus on the discs. What level were your fusions? Discs can be replaced with artificial discs, protrusions can be removed. Do you have MRI results of from the lumbar.
I hope the May injections are helpful.

My entire spine is fused or stabilized by hardware with the exception of C7-T2. This allows me to turn my head 1/2 wat to the right and left so I could keep driving. I have FBSS of thoracic spine and FBSS of the lumbar spine. 14 surgeries, live in constant chronic pain. Despite having a drug pump and SCS I know I will never be pain free again.

@csbarry it looks like I’m getting some of these injections for issues in my lumbar area that was found from an MRI
