Can't get rid of burping after esophagectomy: What helps?

Posted by naoshapiro1 @naoshapiro1, Apr 11 9:07am

I got an esophagectomy in June 2019 and for the last almost year and a half. I've been using omeprazole twice a day and Pepcid and I took my normal bone scan last week and it showed I lost 8% of my bones so I'm thinking of using an infusion of RECLAST but I can't seem to get rid of this burping and I have a bad case ibs

naoshapiro1,
Hi have been taking omeseprilole twice a day now for quite a while. It has stopped all acid reflux but I do have more gas so I've also tried taking gasex but I don't see much difference. I had chemo and radiation for cancer mass found in lower esophagus several years ago. The tumor is gone and scans have been clear. But I still have Barretts and the docs keep doing endoscopies and ablations about every 3 months. I have one coming up next week. Let me know if I can answer any questions?

@dsh33782 I was treated for gas where the indication was that I had SIBO then I took Augmentin for 14 days and I no longer have gas. I had an esophagectomy and I assume you had one too, so I don't know how you could have Barrett's esophagus since within an esophagectomy they pull the stomach up. Perhaps you didn't have an esophagectomy my problem is that the omeprazole takes away bone in apparently the bone building medicine can cause bone cancer strokes and heart attack so I'm not going to take bone building medicine. I'll probably take reclast and then go to a PT place and work on building bone

No I did not have esophagectomy so I still have complete esophagus. Let us know how the reclast and PT work out?

Even when you have an esophagectomy you can still develop Barrett's in the remaining portion of your original esophagus that your newly fashioned stomaphagus is attached to... that's why they keep an eye on things during endoscopies.

thanks gary, luckily I had an endoscopy and no barrets found. Sorry about yours if you have it. I try to eat 4 smal meals per day am 99% vegan but was eating one egg white and 1.25 ounces chicken per day, just dropped the egg white as it is too much volume. That is the meal I eat a small amount of oatmeal 25 grams dry and soaked, with 9 grams of pecan and 5 grams of dried mullberry for the vitamin c.

My thoracic surgeon just looked at my seven year CAT scan. I had one two years ago. Nothing has changed. She said that I still have a para conduit hernia but since I can eat and haven't lost weight and I'm not throwing up, she would not do anything about it--- has never done a surgery for it and would not like to do it on me because I'm 81 years old. I'm just wondering if anybody else has been diagnosed with that and could this be why I'm burping all day

I am seven years out from my surgery chemo radiation, but I've developed a para conduit hernia - my doctor says it's not bad enough to do an operation. I'm maintaining my weight. I exercise I walk. I'm in PT for balance and osteoporosis. I took an infusion of RECLAST to help my bones and I just added one iron pill every other day to increase my ferritin score, but I'm bothered by burping mostly all day. I don't have reflux anymore. I take omeprazole both in the morning and at night and I take Pepcid one at 11 and two at 8 o'clock. I'm starting the Nerva program again for IBS . Both my Gastro and my thoracic surgeon said that I have to live with the burping. I just wanna know if anybody has any suggestions -I do have to drink about 90 ounces of water a day because I make kidney stones and I've been able to do that and eat 4 small meals a day that I stop at 4:30 445. I go to sleep at nine. I sleep on a mattress cover that slopes up and a couple of pillows on top of that and I'm in PT also for neck pain just wanna know if anybody has any suggestions regarding the burping? I have taken swallowing lessons and I am pretty sure that I'm not swallowing air when I eat or drink I'm only taking three or four sips of water at a time from a glass not from a straw and I'm very careful to eat slowly
