This same thing happens to me and I never thought I’d find other people with the same issues! My trigger is flexing/straining my throat. Like you’re pushing a burp out type of deal. I think I do this due to being stressed/anxious.

It’s only happened to me twice (both coming in the last 2 years). Both times the pain lasted over 1-2 GRUELING hours.

RESOLUTION (truly hope this helps someone):
1st time: I looked directly ahead, with a slight upward head tilt, and flexed my neck muscles until it popped back into place.

2nd time: I laid with my head leaning off the edge of a pillow (head leaned all the way back but relaxed and resting on the pillow) —> opened my mouth wide and rotated my head counterclockwise (clockwise may work too) while flexing my neck muscles all at the same time.
This was after over 2 hours of trial and error, so as one of my last resorts, I was rotating out of desperation and it worked. If I were an emotional person, tears would’ve fallen from my eyes after I swallowed with no pain after this method.

We’re in this together folks. I hope this helps someone!

@mrdreamer sounds like occipital neuralgia.
I have it.
