My nephrologist wants me to take Jardiance for CKD?

Posted by steveutnv @steveutnv, Oct 8, 2025

My kidney doctor says I should try taking Jardiance for my CKD. He says patients have seen good results with it, even though Jardiance use for CKD is not recommended. It's $800 with my part D deductible, so I've declined.

Has anyone here taken Jardiance for CKD?

Nephrologist wants me to take Jardiance. It has been approved for CKD and slowing eGFR decline. Only UTI is problem. Looking at Cranberry extract PAC of 36 mg to prevent UTI.

My Mayo nephrologist said that fatal skin rashes and more peeing are the common side effects. I wonder if cranberry extract is an effective way to avoid the former. My local nephrologist recommended regular bathing to prevent the fatal skin rash. No mention of UTI.

I’m new in the group & first time to post. My nephrologist put me to this new medication Jardiance & this is my 4th week taking it. I have a nephrologist visit on April 8 to discuss the result of my blood test for my new medication. I did some research for this medication it seems very promising to ckd patient. I just don’t like the joint/ muscle pain side effects which is so hard for me to tolerate but hoping it will just go away for few weeks or so. Yes, it’s expensive medication. I paid $213 for 3 mos supply through my RX insurance. I do mail order for all my medications.

Hi,
I take Jardiance and tolerate it well. It seems to be helpful with my type 2.

@mlink Did your Nephrologist request pre-approval from your insurancce?

When i discussed medication with my former Nephrologist, he said something like: " don't work with xxx insurance companies," so I called United Health Care.

Aftrer soe normal run-around, the company said they would pre-approve one of several medications for CKD-4 with Sleep Apnea if the physician asked for pre-approval.

I have a new Nephrologist appt later this week. Hopeful.

I've been taking Jardiance/Empagliflozin, generic, for 2 years with good results and no side affects.
Due to legalized RX. thievery in the U.S I get mine from Canada. $112. for 10 mg. 90 day supply.
Canada Prescriptions Plus is my pharmacy supplier, and they do require your M.D's prescription . There is a 3-4 week lead time on deliveries, so you need to plan your ordering schedule accordingly.

@gently thank you. I've been researching it and it appears it is approved for CKD in my situation. Now I'm trying to work my way through my Medicare part d coverage and see if it's going to cost an arm and a leg or if I can get away for a few fingers.

@steveutnv
I started Jardiance the 1st of March, after determining that I would reach my deductible after 3 months ($600) - I have Part D coverage through Wellcare. I am paying $204 out of pocket each month, but what a small price to pay for better kidney health. After 3 months, my share will be about $50 per month. Still expensive, but doing whatever I can to help out my kidneys!

@mlink
PCP says Jardiance helps lower blood sugar which should help kidney function. $213 for 3 mths is not as expensive as my husband was quoted - $650 for 3 months.
Pls let us know how you’re doing.
