Like many others my early symptoms were attributed to getting older, stress, etc. Had REM sleep behavior disorder for years - first symptom, but minimized as "nightmares" initially. Onset of orthostatic hypotension exacerbated by heat and humidity in SC - initially attributed to low Carb diet and dehydration. Slowly progressive GI symptoms with slow gut, bloating, GERD and early satiety - all initially attributed to Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Then loss of sense of smell, difficulty with handwriting (smaller and smaller until I can't read my own writing), difficulty turning over in bed and getting out of bed and a shuffling gait with a tendency to lean forward. Over past year developing diminished voice volume and fatigue and weakness exacerbated by stress and heat. Most recently noted air hunger after exertion and lower extremity swelling - Echocardiogram pending to determine status of heart function. Current diagnosis: Autonomic nervous system failure and likely early Parkinson's ( though no significant tremor).

I think your experience is shared by many others. Parkinson symptoms are misread as symptoms of something else, a more conventional or better known sickness, which becomes the working hypothesis and leads to barking up the wrong tree for years.

My fatigue is from Parkinsons, not my heart, so one more cardiac test is not going to find anything new. I was given a 6 minute walk test by pulmonology. I could not keep walking and had to sit after 1.5 minutes. So imagine my astonishment when I was told I had passed the test??!!

I know age brings changes, but I feel some anger when the provider hits upon "you're getting older" as the first explanation for almost everything, and again progress in understanding my symptoms is not made.
