I am 78 and was an active healthy senior til covid and paxlovid rx 9/15/25. Now 6 1/2 months later , severe cough waking me at night. ‘Barking seal’ cough wakes the family and dog. Could nt even go out in cold weather w o albuterol inhaler rx d by md. Md ruled out pneumonia , and chest ct was clear. Still no explanations for cough and no solution. Refuse to take o t c syrups like Vicks nighttime cough n cold due to cardiac effects and complications of antihistamines inducing cardiac higher blood pressure. There seems to be no diagnosis and no end in sight to my new chronic cough ‘ of idiopathic origin. ‘ pulmonologist diagnosed seasonal allergies not asthma years ago and have rx to visit one again but I am not hopeful. I will never take paxlovid again(, it also left me with chronic itch of lower legs and feet. ) if the cough does not wake me up, the itch does.

@mitchinpa Hey there. God Bless you. I can so relate. I am so sorry you are battling all of
this.

I have had COVID twice. The first time was the worst with double pneumonia & asthmatic bronchitis. This has left me more prone to asthma, asthmatic bronchitis & pnemonia now.

Personally, I use the Albuterol in haler. I too "bark like a seal", but, only when I have an asthma flare. I had horrible coughing and it lasted quite a while. I can hear myself wheezing as well. When it worsens I have to use a Nebulizer with the Albuterol.

Can you tolerate Robitussin PM? I think they make one for people with high BP. That is my go to cough syrup and Ricola cough drops.

I used a mucus thinner for all of that thick mucus......over the counter Guafenensin, low dose for me. I used NAC (supplement) to dry up the mucus. I did not take them both together.

Cool mist humidifer in the bedroom at night, head elevated, saline spray for dry nose & Children's Zyrtec liquid at night (2.5 ml), Vitamin C, Zinc & D3 with K2.

This has been a hard year for allergies. Asthma & allergies go hand in hand. There is a website Pollen.com that you can type in your zip code and see the pollen count for the day.

Have you been allergy tested recently? (I know they are not 100% accurate always). You may have some new allergies.

I use Flonase with the change of seasons & Azasteline (SP?) spray for drainage. These help.

Being prone to sinus infections, I irrigate my sinus when I have been exposed to a lot of allergens and it really helps.

Stay hydrated. Drinking water thins out mucus.

The Children's Zyrtec Liquid may also help with your itching or Benadryl cream or Aveeno cream on your legs and feet. You can take more than the 2.5 ml, but, that's all I can tolerate.

Have you been to a COVID Recovery Clinic? I have Long COVID and all of my prior ailments were exascerbated with COVID and still are.....but better.

We were not prepared for COVID and we are still recovering from it and I know its frustrating to have all these things hit at once. Some people do well with COVID, others have long going effects from it. What a nasty virus that changed our country.

Praying for you right now. Blessings......
