Problem with Chronic constipation
I have a history of hypothyroidism, severe endometriosis/treatment was a hysterectomy 17 years ago.I also have a hx of IBS. My thyroid hormone levels are stable. I eat like a rabbit(I poop like one too, LOL!!!!!!). I eat a large amount of fiber and drink almost every hour(nonalcholic).ONly prescription drugs I take are armour thyroid and my estrogen/prosterone troche. I make a coconut bread and I add psyllium husks, flax seed and chia seed to it. I eat it practically every am. I also eat a spinach salad for lunch daily with nuts and yogurt and eat a lean meat and veggie and more coconut bread at night. I do one cheat meal with a cheat dessert once per week. I am relatively active for my age of 60. I've been to a gastroenterologist and we have tried Linzess which didn't help at all. I take miralax, and a Super Cleanse tab one per day which has herbs to soften the stool and to stimulate the bowel and It barely works. I am at a loss. I have not tried Montegrity yet. I don't know if it will be helpful and the side effects scare me. I had a CT of my abdomen and it was ok, no obstructions. The gastroenterologist that I go to practically accused me of abusing laxatives. I would be impacted if I didnt use the miralax and the Super Cleanse. Diet/water and activity do not help. I had diarrhea from my late teens to the age of 36 when my intestines out of the blue just shut down completely. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I was put on Synthroid but the constipation didn't go away. So if there is any gastroenterologist out there that can help me, please let me know.I feel defeated and worry about my health.

Hallelujah and agree that it takes what it takes. Lately in the maybe last year or maybe longer, I've fallen into my own tricky thinking, "Maybe I have gotten past all that". I have not and even developed a small bowel destruction caused by adhesions from a previous surgery from who knows when. I had a laparoscopic surgery at NYU. It can happen again. I'm going to TJ's today - 1/2 and 1/2 until I remember which I counted. I am now 73 with some new issues but all of me seems more manageable if pooping is normalized.
Based on my experience of being completely normal with my digestion until a few years ago, I suspect that the constipation has an emotional component.
@celia16 Yes, I totally agree. The emotions connected to this malady are made worse by worry, constant thought, obscessing and trying one thing after another. Relaxation is the key. How to achieve this is another problem but worrying about it will not help.

1 Reaction@sjd416 I have had chronic constipation for many years, due to having an implanted pain pump and late stage Adhesive Arachnoiditis.
Some of the things I use besides added fiber, are HOT prune juice (a nurse suggested it and it helped me), Smooth Move tea, raisins, and flax seeds (in anything you can). Daily supplements are Colace stool softeners, Magnesium Citrate capsules, and MiraLAX. My prescriptions include Linzess and Lactulose. In the event nothing is working, I keep a bottle of Magnesium Citrate liquid in the refrigerator to drink, or try the old fashioned enema. One of those usually produce something fairly quickly.
Hopefully I’ve given you some ideas to try to get things moving again. Best of luck.

1 Reaction@danilo1m I have very similar bowel problems and need to take Linzess 290, Lactulose, Dulcolax, and a stool softener in addition to extra virgin olive oil, water enemas to have a watery bowel movement passing pebble-like waste. I have bad diverticulosis, especially in the sigmoid colon, and have a tortuous colon that can only be scoped with a pediatric scope. CT scan of pelvis and abdomen shows restriction, not blockage, have internal hemorrhoids, nerve, pelvic floor issues, and urinary frequency issues. 83 yrs old trying to avoid life-threatening bowel surgery.

I have a similar load of lower GI problems and in addition I can't get my entryway closet folding door to close
and I'm 93 YO. Afraid to go up on a ladder.
One thing that has helped my constipation a lot is Yoplait Yogurt. To start I took 2 per day and then went to 1 per day and have achieved an almost normal BM cycle. It seemed that the older I became the less my stomach wanted to do.
Hope this helps.

Chronic constipation is one of my Earliest memories (+- age 5) ... so for me that makes 83 years of "Chasing The Garbage Truck ( ... having trouble catching it)"! Like you my menu includes everything that's supposed to "Get things working" ... sometimes better than others. The 2 stool softeners I've found that are working best for me are: 1 Perdiem tablet + 2 or 3 Senna tablets with an 8 or 10 oz glass of water, Generally works in about 8-12 hr.'s. Over most of my adult life when I've had "The Conversation" with Dr.'s, they've vacillated between disbelief & sympathy. For awhile I went to a Chinese Herbal Dr., she concocted a special capsule for me. It worked for about 18 months, then my gastro-system dug in its heels & it didn't work any more ... need I say the Chinese Dr. was "Peeved"? (Wonder how she thought I Felt!!).
Curiosity ? To your knowledge did anyone else in your Family history have "the problem"? The reason I ask is - it Galloped thru my Fathers' Family ... going back at least 2 generations. As I Like to say, "You Can't Change your Genes ... & I'm Not Talking Levi Strauss!"

You Have My Sincerest Sympathy ... as I posted below, "We're Singing out of The Same Hymnal" ... I sometimes wonder ... the Medical Profession has made tremendous discoveries & advancements in the past 5-10-20+ years ... & yet this "Shitty Problem" seems to be one that goes on & on & ON! (Maybe because "It Stinks!").
When it begins to 'get me down', I just HAVE to take a little time, sit back, & Count My Blessings.
