Newly diagnosed with liver cancer: Where to get care?

Posted by susanblan @susanblan, 5 days ago

Hi , I was wondering if anyone has suggestions about how , where, who, hospital, cancer center is the best at treating liver cancer? Newly diagnosed and scared!! 60 year old female with past melanoma removed 3 years ago.
Thank you for any info to help!

@susanblan It is a scary diagnosis to hear. How were you diagnosed? Do you know specifically what type of liver cancer you have? I see that you have visited Mayo in the past. Are you still going there? Which location?

Right now they say malignant spots on the liver…
Haven’t been to Mayo in a while. Jacksonville is my location.
Thanks!

@tomrennie Hi Susan. My local doctors and insurance folks are great but I live in suburban Denver. Denver also has other hospitals and programs that do liver transplants and I have heard good things about them. But I am so glad, thankful, that I was lucky enough to have my liver transplant at the Mayo Clinic in AZ. I had liver cancer and if you can get a transplant before the cancer spreads outside the liver that is a huge plus. Mayo has seen it all. Experts on the science, the latest and greatest everything, great Dr.s , all the folks are caring. I could not possibly recommend them higher. If it is an insurance option for you I don't think you can do better anywhere in the world. If you have other options other than transplant best of luck choosing. I am late 60s , muddled through just fine and so glad I went for it. But while a liver transplant is a real life event I have chatted with many who are now cancer free and have moved on with their lives post transplant. Best of luck. !!!

@craigcraig thanks so much for the info. I guess it doesn't matter what state to receive treatment in, if insurance is cooperating. It's worth it. I agree the Mayo Clinic is definitely one of the best in everything they do. It will be a journey.
PET scan is next. thanks again.

@susanblan, You've been through a cancer diagnosis before, but it's never easy. I've picked up two, so far. My first was lung cancer, but I did have lung cancer lesions on my liver at that time. It sounds like your provider scheduling the PET is a great next step. Knowing if there are other locations with a potential cancer will be important. Did they mention a liver biopsy yet? That also may point to the origin of the cancer; liver or otherwise. Knowing the type will drive the types of treatment options. Sending hugs, it's not easy to get through the early days. Take a deep breath and take one day at a time. Focus on what you know, not what might be.

@lls8000
Thankyou! Good advice. Yes they did biopsy on liver and esophagus. Still awaiting PET results. We decided not to look at results at home; only at Doctor appointments. Thanks again.
