R-ALA features very heavily on this forum as a potential remedy for peripheral neuropathy. Does any Neurologist actually prescribe it.

My neurologist prescribed both Alpha Lipoic and folbee tab for me. On my first visit I told her that my primary doctor had prescribed Gabapentin which I refused to take after reading about the side effects. The two prescriptions I am taking are helping me and sometimes I use Mama Bears cream which also helps.

@rkh950 I’ve been taking ALA 600mg. for 8 yrs. (with food) it does help. It can cause hair loss so it’s good to also take biotin. I’m not familiar with folbee. ALCAR is another helpful supplement.

@rkh950 I just read that folbee contains B12, B6 and folic acid which I take separately, it’s a good combination.

@cynbell I go online to Amazon. The price is good. MY Neurologist sold it in his office and it was expensive. NO WAY! Also you might pay more in med stores where they sell different meds also expensive. On Amazon they sell Nutricost alpha lipoic acid and for 240 capsules it’s 24.89. I would look a bit for sure. I use the Nutricost alpha lipoic acid. I have had no problem with it. @rnlorena

You don't need a prescription for it

@elroy I take gabapentin 600mg. One pill in the morning and two at night. I tossed and turned last night with my legs aching and my toes and feet on fire. My thought was, did I take my gabapentin. After a miserable night I should have known. Yes I missed my dose. It’s the only thing that helps me. I take alpha lipoic acid for cramping in my feet too.

@cliffmoyer

I have been to a number of doctors for both my neuropathy and for problems with healing of my shin shave biopsy. Nearly all of them wanted to prescribe gabapentin. Is this the IT drug of our time? I refuse to take it. I do take ALA which my neurologist recommended and which can be purchased OTC. For my leg I am doing physical therapy where I get exercises, massage and red light therapy. Along with my own stretching and self-massage with healing balm, it has proved to be helpful. The healing of my leg is, in turn, helping my neuropathy.

My neurologist at Duke suggested I try it along with Pregabalin. After about six months I stopped taking the Alpha Liponic Acid and detected no change. That is to say it did not seem to help vs just taking Pregabalin by itself.

gabapentin works for me. I take 300mg 2 to 3 times a day.

It’s an over the counter drug. If you doo not see it ask the pharmacist. She can order it or order on Amazon.
