Trying AlgaeCal instead of Prolia - Looking for provider support

Posted by stubbornmom @stubbornmom, Dec 10, 2024

I'm having a doosey of a time finding a doctor who is open to my using AlgaeCal Plus and Strontium boost as first line of treatment for Osteoporosis with compression fracture. They automatically want me to use Prolia and won't even look at the studies that I downloaded from AlgaeCal website. Is there anyone here who uses AlgaeCal in the New York (downstate) area that has a doctor that they would recommend?

@sstopalian Prolia is an anti-resorptive medication, not an anabolic. It slows bone breakdown by reducing the number of osteoclasts by holding them at an immature stage of development. Your normal rate of bone growth does continue but it is not increased as it would be on an anabolic medication like Tymlos, Forteo, or Evenity.

@oopsiedaisy Not sure I said Prolia is an anabolic. If I did mistake. I meant Evenity.

@sstopalian Sorry if I misunderstood but I read this in your post below: "Prolia is a medication, I believe, is anabolic, ie builds bones."

I made the same mistake here awhile back and someone kindly corrected me. I also thought it stimulated bone growth.

If I'm not mistaken, AlgaeCal can contain heavy metals. I believe I was going to go that route and decided against it for that reason. Now I'm working on utilizing nutrition in my diet that will help with bone broth being one of them. Hopefully, this will work. I won't be tested for awhile. I also exercise everyday with the help of exercises that I learned in physical therapy. My doctor says it's helping me a lot. Good luck to you all!

@rosem1953 sadly the thing about prolia that no one tells you is you can't just stop it or you will get prolia rebound. This is when you experience rapid loss of bone density and spike in bone turnover. It occurs because Prolia temporarily suppresses bone breakdown; stopping it causes accumulated osteoclasts (bone-eating cells) to become suddenly active, risking multiple spontaneous vertebral fractures. I know because it happened to me. I regret ever taking that medication as it cause three compression fractures all at once.

@maymore I am so sorry to hear what happened to you when you got off of Prolia. This breaks my heart because we relied on our doctors to educate us about Prolia and we had no clue that the negative affects from getting off would be so profound. I hope you are doing better. I am too skeptical of all the injections that many doctors prescribe to agree to those treatments. I know there are alot of questions about AlgaeCal and the Strontium supplements but for now, I am committed to staying on this program and hope my next DEXA scores will show even minor improvement.
