I was put on Xifaxan and neomycin today which I have used in the past. I have been on Florajen digestive probiotic the last few months. Have any of you continued the probiotic during treatment? I have been given conflicting information. I also have heard it is good to switch up probiotics every so often? Thanks

Welcome to Mayo Connect. I have been treated for SIBO a few times, and I had to take probiotics due to the side effects of antibiotics, bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. I cannot remember which antibiotic I was on.

I suggest you check with your provider about taking the probiotics. When I started taking the antibiotics and developed side effects, my provider recommended probiotics, but everyone is different.

In addition to asking whether it's OK to take, also ask about timing: how many hours after antibiotics should you take probiotics? A pharmacist might also be able to answer these questions about the time between the two medications.

How long do you need to be on antibiotics?

I am now on XIFAXAN & Neomycin for SIBO.
In 4 weeks I will be tested for Fructose.
Previous test showed high Methane .
While on XIFAXAN & Neomycin + S. Boulardi ( 2 weeks) is it safe to have
5 raspberries & 6 small blueberries?

Thank You!

You need to use the FODMAP app so you can see what foods are low or high. It’s really helpful.

Dr Satish Rao, one of the nation's leading gastros who researches this says using probiotics may not be helpful at all and may be detrimental. Search him on Youtube. He is the one who is now a leading specialist on archaea, by the way. Fascinating. He was my dr at U Iowa for years.

My dietitian had me stop probiotics except for S. Boulardi while I was being treated for SIBO. She told me other probiotics can actually be food for the overgrowth of bacteria making it worse. Also recommended was to follow the FODMAP diet.
