Drop in PSA level, wonder why? Biopsy scheduled anyway.
So, 5 months ago 2 PSA tests 3 weeks apart; 11.9 then down to 11.7. Opted to scheduled myself for biopsy after MRI (Pirads 5 one lesion). Just got an updated PSA in prep for biopsy, PSA is down to 8.7. Doc says do biopsy anyway and I agree. So, what in the heck is going on with the PSA? Glad it went down but wondering what's up. Anyone have a guess?

My PSA has jumped around at times. I had prostatitis that I did not even know I had until a high psa 8.4 caused my urologist at the Mayo to prescribe antibiotics. I was retested about 2 months later and my psa came down to 1.2 which is more normal. I agree that with a Pirads 5 lesion it is a smart move to go ahead with the biopsy anyway even though the PSA has come down some. I will say a prayer all goes well for you.

2 Reactions@bobgolf thank you for your response. Frankly, I was just glad the number did not increase. Since it reduced by 3 I am starting to wonder if the possible issue may be more than just the worst case scenario but still doing the biopsy to be more sure.

1 ReactionConsider an AI second read of the MRI by contacting: (MaleScan) precisionprostateconsulting.com It costs $259.00 if the insurer denies it or if the data transmitted from the MRI Center is unusable. Biopsies through the perineum reduces the 3/4% chance of infection and can visualize and access the anterior lobe. The anterior lobe fortunately is infrequently a source of prostate cancer. Also US fusion MRI helps locate the target lesions. The second read of an MRI may find difficult to distinguish secondary tumors also.

You must have an MRI without contrast in order to get it evaluated by this company. Most people do get MRIs with contrast so I just want to make sure you check before you get involved with this.
Here is a video from the company that does the second opinion on the MRI

I work with DeepView Imaging (formerly Precision Prostate Consulting) and just wanted to clarify that we can process both contrast (mpMRI) and non-contrast (bpMRI). So, if you've had an MRI of the prostate, we should be able to analyze it regardless of the type. Also, to clarify the cost, it is $259 for the first analysis and $159 for subsequent ones (i.e. for those on active surveillance).

Interesting you should say that because I was in a meeting that was done by Dr. Randall W Jones where he explained all about how the MRI second opinion was done.
He made it clear during the meeting that they did not work with the MRI with contrast.
Here is a link to the video from that meeting

Has that changed since he gave that presentation?
