I'm very sorry to hear of this.
No one, especially a child, should have to experience this.
What is the prognosis?
I hope that given the child's age, recovery will be swift and complete.

Hi, @shaan - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm so sorry to hear about this poor 10-year-old boy experiencing a stroke upon waking. I'm assuming this is your son?

Glad you connected with @scottrl. I'm also tagging a few additional members who may have some thoughts for you as you deal with this. Please meet @blindinglightning @woojr @lesa458 @susiewordsmith @lefsequeen.

Will you share more about the surgery that was performed? How is the recovery going so far?

I'm saddened as others have written. I don't have anything to add. My experience with strokes is limited to my elderly mother who had a minor stroke ten years ago when she was 86. She fortunately recovered quickly and is doing well up to today. God will watch over this young fellow. @woojr

It’s so tragic to hear about a young child having suffered a stroke. Most times the stroke is caused by a congenital abnormal blood vessel such as an aneurysm. There are other types of abnormal blood vessels too.
The symptoms can be sudden -like this 10 year old boy- or lasting a few days, mimicking other illnesses.
I know of one young girl, age 12- who had a stroke caused by a different abnormality.
She recovered fully with physical and other therapies.
Children are strong and more “elastic” and have a better chance at recovery.
Hoping for a quick recovery for this boy.

Am sorry this child has gone through this. But if you are going to have a stroke, the younger the better for obvious reasons: youth brings resilience.

Healthy living and aging also brings resilience.

Strokes are associated with aging because aging blood vessels cause some fragility and atherosclerosis comes with age.

Many other age groups have strokes. Pregnancy, childbirth, and post child birth, and brain vessel or major vessel defects, high blood pressure can cause strokes.

Low blood pressure can also cause strokes. Don't suddenly stop taking BP medications because it can cause a stroke.

Bearing down in the early morning for a bowel movement can cause a stroke in anyone.
