Thyroid Medication had the opposite effects on me

I have had horrible effects with all kinds of thyroid treatment.
This is my suspicion of why that may be.

I moved into a HUD housing project more than 30 yrs ago because of my income level.
I immediately experienced severe reactions and was unable to move elsewhere.

For the first 2 yrs my nose never stopped running. I could hardly wake up to get off the couch. I had to leave the building for a long time to wake up. I discovered later that I had to be away for 3 or more days to return to a more normal energy level.

I do not normally suffer allergies. The building is 100 years old and has had constant issues with rooftop leaking.

Over time I discovered that many tenants suffered from various yet if you looked at them similar problems. I came to suspect that we shared an environmental situation and that doctors were treating us for various symptoms. No one seemed to be looking at cause.

About a year later I seemed to become very hyper active. I began to adjust my habits. If I had to be somewhere to communicate or work, for example I would try to walk. That helped me a lot.

A year or more on I lost 2 teeth where mucus was constantly flowing inside my mouth. Probably within 2 years my doctors decided that I was suffering from an under active thyroid. Mind you that I had actually began to be hyperactive and to think normally I had to constantly exercise, walk, etc.
Now this was not disturbing to me as I had began lifting weights in my teens. It was like having an extra boost. But if my thyroid was now UNDER ACTIVE, why would I become over energetic and not less? Also my cholesterol level was showing as sky high (Another subject I discovered was that I could not tolerate cholesterol medications)

Here began the application by various doctors of thyroid medication for my under active thyroid for which I was told I would die if I did not take them. And here began several years of hell where each and every treatment caused serious problems.

1 Blurred vision to the point where I could not read.
2 Open sores all over my body which would not heal.
3 Inability to understand people speaking to me. People would speak the same things to me 3 times. I would not understand. Friends began to beg me to stop taking my medication.
4 Balding on head, serious loss which would not return.
5 Memory loss.
6 There are many other problems but it has been a long time.

It has been a long and frustrating experience with doctors who would not believe or listen to my problems with thyroid medication. It has gone on forever. And here's a somewhat hilarious remembrance to my first treatment: Thyroid medicine: No side effects.

I am now in my 70's. When I am treated by doctors for various things they always bring up my 'underactive thyroid' and medication. They refer to my high cholesterol and mention thyroid medication.

And of course I tell them of my previous experiences with treatment which most find impossible to believe.

I have lived in this building for more than 30 years. HUD has very poor oversight. I have not been able to move out on disability income. The building over the years has gone from allergies (?) possible black mold(?) to drug labs where tenants find drugs in their blood or (?) urine.

So I guess the final question would be.... Is this a thyroid problem, a problem with medication or an environmental problem?

I assume by thyroid medication that you mean levothyroxine which is essentially the thyroid hormone. I had my thyroid removed due to cancer. I take this med. Regular simple blood tests every three months verifies that I am on the right dose. The doctor has very occasionally modified the dosage. I have had no side effects except low energy when the dosage had to be increased. Otherwise, I have had no med side effects. I assume that your doctors are doing the blood tests. It can't be stressed enough, do not make any changes to your meds without the advice of your doctor.

I what Google the side effects of the medication you are taking?
Do you have someone that is monitoring you or helping you?
I do think you should get an air quality test if you can from someone.
I wish you the very best and moving I had with this issues, but please check your air quality in the building

@naise could all the tenants in your building not start a petition to the housing authority or a branch of government dealing with housing? Or all tenants get together and stage a protest till someone does something about the condition of your building?

What is HUD?
