Radiation machine down for several days. Has anyone experienced this?

Posted by dicka @dicka, Mar 24 9:46am

My RT protocol is/was 26 sessions, 5 days a week. After completing 13 sessions the linear accelerator went down. Rescheduled (including weekend), but machine still down. It remains inop after M and Tu this week. So, I have missed 4 sessions plus the weekend, resulting in 6 days without treatment. The radiation team is hopeful, but my experience (retired systems engineer) tells me wishful thinking won’t fix a hardware problem. That said, has anyone experienced this kind of break in treatment? Thoughts? Comments? Thanks! 😁

I had 2 missed appointments during my 28 proton radiation treatments (during April-May 2021).
The first was when the machine was down; the 2nd was due to a scheduling conflict that I had.
We simply added on 2 sessions at the end of the scheduled treatments.
Everything turned out fine.

My centre has more than one machine, so when one went down they scheduled me to the other one. I had 20 sessions without missing a beat even though there were maintenance issues.

In my case the machine went down for a couple of days, think it was a Siemens brand. Ironic now that I think about it. They had others but so many of us were getting zapped that I did miss 2 days. They also told me I could take my birthday off if I wanted (I didn’t) but sounds like not a big deal to miss some and make it up on the back end. 6 days would worry me enough to ask the doc. Hopefully not a big deal. You will be ringing the bell soon enough!

We did in Richmond. Turned out to be a corroded electrical connection under the table where people tend to leak. Radiation is accumulative so enjoy your break.

@heavyphil Saw a guy running out of the room to the bathroom cussing with a towel tucked in front of his pants. Yep, saw it in the mirror when I got to the bathroom. They burned me on a low bladder a few times.

@chippydoo Whoa! You had actual ‘burn’ or redness on your skin??

@heavyphil This made me laugh. When I was getting treated I got 8 grays for 5 days and I kept thinking "what if the tech forgets the decimal point and inputs 800 instead of 8.00?"
