Frequent Pooping without Constipation or Diarrhea

Posted by totoro @totoro, Jan 3, 2023

Hello,

My dad frequently poops, at least four times a day and around four times a night. But, unusually, he does not have diarrhea or constipation ever.

His GI doctor has done a lot of tests over the last few years, including a capsule endoscopy camera. But his doctor cannot find anything wrong, like ulcers. We have asked his primary care physician, nurses, emergency room doctors, almost everyone, and no one has heard of this.

When we read about IBS, Crohn’s disease, Celiac Disease, it’s not that.

How can he reduce his symptoms and get healthy again? Please offer suggestions and support.

Thank you.

I had the same problem, maybe pooping 10-20 times a day. This was especially annoying when trying to sleep. Finally found the problem was excessive use of Magnesim supplements. When I stopped using them it went back to 1-3 poops/day.

@tc7231 thanks I don’t take any meds or supplements. The amount I poop is so out of proportion to my food intake. No one has been able to figure it out

@pennylane212 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Sounds like an awful lot of bowel movements. So sorry to hear no one has been able to figure it out.

What kinds of doctors have you seen about this issue so far? What tests have they run on you?

An excellent GI Doctor and my primary care. I’ve had all kinds of tests and procedures. H pylori, c diff, endoscopy. We’ve tried different meds and foods. It’s horrible and I’ve planned a trip with a tour group that will be leaving in the mornings for day tours. I’m up and hope I can go enough times to make it through to each stop. That’s adding to the stress

@pennylane212 I wonder if adjusting the eating schedule would help? I do intermittent fasting. If you are consuming snacks all day I wonder if that would create a situation like your description?

I don’t eat snacks all day. I have a light breakfast either 1 piece of toast with a very thin layer of organic peanut butter and a sliced half of banana or oatmeal with blueberries, walnuts and cinnamon, lunch is usually tuna salad, regular salad, sometimes eggs and dinner is the reverse- salad if I didn’t have it for lunch, sometimes pasta. Fruit or cheese and crackers if I’m hungry between meals. That’s when I’m eating at home.

Consider digestive enzymes. I have epi and when you don’t digest. Properly there is more poop and you go more often. Just a suggestion!

Thank you. What are they exactly?

Actually, since I've been on the high fiber diet, which helps keep my inflammatory arthritis and a lot of other things in check, four times a day is really not that bad. When I worked with the pelvic floor physical therapist, I was told that was within normal range. They also advised me to take the psyllium husk drink and probiotics for gut health, and I usually go back to using those whenever things go too far in one direction or the other.
