Trapped gas - have tried everything!

Posted by Twocoastsm @marlenec, Sep 22, 2023

I have IBS-D and have real problems with pain from trapped gas along with bloating. I have tried IB Gard, Gas-x, ginger, recommended yoga poses and abdominal massage, Hyoscyamine (prescribed by GI) with very little relief. I have been maintaining a low FODMAP diet for months and had a two week course of Xifaxan d/t positive SIBO results two months ago. I had a CT scan at the ER two months ago because I thought I had diverticulitis (but didn’t) and the scan didn’t reveal anything of note. Is there anything else people have tried and that has helped with this issue?

Hi @elaine1212. It is nice to see you join Mayo Clinic Connect! Your comment describing how you have been able to improve your symptoms is encouraging and helpful. Thank you.

“Food as medicine” really does make sense, especially once it has been experienced. Like you, I make my meals at home so I know what goes into my food. I have identified a few safe restaurants as a treat or to meet friends. Otherwise, eating out has not been worth it.

Changing habits and avoiding processed (and ultra processed) food is difficult. How did you begin, and what do you say to others when they question or are critical? What symptoms have you been able to improve with your way of eating?

@jlharsh Hi, I think that it will be a long process, and may never be totally be resolved. But you can make big improvements that you can live with. Eating out for me was a trigger, problems within a hour. After my husband passed away I stopped cooking, needed to be out somewhere to eat. Big mistake, I’m being tested for a few things, not sure where I stand with that. But I’m finally to point where I can fix my meals, but I do miss going out. But having worked in restaurants I know what goes on and it’s not good, it only takes one person who does not care about washing hands or coming to work sick or just customers around you. I gave up a lot of foods including chocolate, coffee, sugar, fried food anything with caffeine is a trigger for me. I stick with very basic foods , if I have eggs I don’t add anything to them, same with other food. Just very basic as I have to let my body heal, maybe at some point that will change. My husband passed away 4 years ago and it has taken along time to get to the point where I know I have to make a change, I have no choice. Just keep track of foods that seems to be a problem, you will start to see a pattern. Also don’t make all changes at once you probably will not be able to stick with it. I love chocolate if I have even one piece I will crave it, so I gave it up going on four months. At first it was hard it was always a way to reward myself, but it’s not worth it. Don’t use food as a way to reward yourself, that’s where I got in trouble. I hope this will help you, and no you are not alone.

@jlharsh Hi, if you have You tube, go to a site called (In plain site),12 u.s. fast food restaurants you must avoid. That is where I started, although these fast foods places were not places I went to often, I did go to Taco Bell a few times. Also let others know about this site. I have stopped eating several foods and drinks…coffee, Pepsi, fried food, processed sweet pastries, oatmeal(Quaker), ketchup, milk and for me chocolate is a big problem. Have lost weight. You need to figure what foods triggers you. I believe caffeine is a problem for a lot of people. I found that if I eliminate just one or two at a time rather than all at once really helps. I still eat small amount of sweets but I fined time to make it, maybe homemade banana bread. My problems started after Covid.. I hope this helps.

I don't have any helpful advice, but I sympathize with your pain. That is the only pain that has made me cry, a 10+ in my book. I wish you the best.
