Grover’s Disease

Posted by sharfar @sharfar, Mar 13, 2022

Hello-I am a 54 year old, active female recently diagnosed with Grover’s Disease. It started shortly after having an MRI. And it started on my neck and went up behind my ear. It is now on my stomach and back and arms. Is there a correlation between the MRI and Grover’s? I’m also a runner but have been running in freezing temperatures, not heat as suggested in much of what I’m reading.
Thanks for any help you may offer including any suggestions on helping to get rid of it.

Have you had a lot of sun shine exposure in your life? The sun damage from UV is what is supposed to cause this matter and damages skin cells. I took sunbaths for years, actually over decades and unfortunately, and the problem is permanent. I've read that its the preservative in that shingles shot that is the villian. That's why I am afraid to get one.

I regret getting the new Shingles shot. I had been in remission after detoxing the heavy metals in my body with daily drinks of blended cilantro about 8 months before I go the Shingles shot. After the shot, within a few days in my abdomen area I developed several patchy rash areas which looked different than the individual GD papuales. I believe the shot gave me a mild case of Shingles. I say mild because this patchy rashed up area was not as painful or itchy as GD. It still was miserable, but the misery index was less than with GD.
I saw one of my dermatologists a month later who told me I should have consulted him about getting the shingles vaccine, because he has seen this reaction to the Shingles vaccine before in patients with eczema.

Hello,
I've missed seeing your posts as well as others. I always learned a lot from your detailed and knowledgable comments. When did you get the shingles shot?
The reason I push back on many medications, especially injections of any kind is my fear of a flair of Grovers. I had the old Zostervax shot decades ago with no problem but seeing the several references to new version's preservative causing this problem with GD will not take it.

Thank you for your support. Because I've been eczema free and my female issues have been resolved I don't check in with Mayo very often.
I got the updated Shingles shot about the 3rd week of Dec 2019. I was free of any active GD, ACD or Perioral Eczema. Within a few days a unique rash started appearing on my waistline area.
Like you I got the Zostervax shot a decade earlier, around the year 2005 and had no reaction. At that time I never had GD, that came years later. I did have Allergic Contact Dermatitis, ACD, but had never been tested for it. Derms just told me I had eczema and prescribed steroids. A decade later I accidently learned about the 5 Day Extended Patch Test which like you I learned I was allergic to several preservatives among over a dozen other contacts. I removed all my allergic contacts from my life and that solved my ACD issues.
I was told this new shingles vaccine could not give you shingles because the shingles in this injection are dead.
I am certain I asked about other ingredients in the injection because since 2015 I was patch tested and learned I was allergic to the preservatives MI/MCI, Methyldibromo glutaronitrile and phenoxyethanol. I was told the vaccine was free of these preservatives. If it does contain preservatives do you know the name?
This vaccine clearly set off some sort unique eczema reaction which looked different from a GD, ACD or Perioral Eczema rash. It looked like a Shingles rash, multiple plaque like rashes.
Definitely have a discussion with your dermatologist.

I don't remember the name of the preservative, if it was even mentioned by name. It was in one of the posts on either FaceBook Grovers group or this Mayo Clinic group.
I get the daily notices by Mayo Clinic and always check the Grovers updates as well as for Demodex which I unfortunately suffer from also. That certainly complicates matters since Grovers skin care with frequent applications of oils and lotion serve to benefits demos. A Catch 22 for sure.

I hope you find relief for your skin issues.
I read up on Dermodex and now wonder if my husband's
Rosacea can have a carry over to these mites.
Keep on searching for answers.
