Strontium citrate, fractures and lack of research

Posted by pami @pami, Apr 15, 2024

I am looking to see if there are any studies done that show a reduced chance of fracture from using Strontium citrate (Algaecal) as opposed to calcium. Everything I have read only mentions increase of density using it. Does anyone have doctor input or a study showing an decrease in bone fractures?

***Director's Note:***
There’s not enough clinical research to know if strontium citrate effectively prevents or treats osteoporosis. Mayo Clinic does not recomend its use. Clinically researched osteoporosis medications have demonstrated fracture prevention benefit with less risk.

The FDA doesn’t regulate supplements in the same way as prescription drugs, so it's not possible to know if if they are safe or work well or even how much of the main ingredient they contain.

If you wish to take a strontium supplement, it is advised to discuss with your doctor.

@kathleen1314 I agree that her reaction and mine may not be the same. I do know that I hesitated to take the strontium . I finally started due to good reviews and within 2 days, I had hives. Coincidence? Maybe, but I had taken nothing different than my regular vitamins. I have never had hives before, so I still feel that strontium caused my reaction . It is starting to subside after 3 days without taking the strontium again. Algae Cal was quick to refund me when I contactd them. Just cautioning others.

It will be at least 6 months or more before I have another scan, and honestly, I'm not sure how long I'll be able to tolerate the side effects of the strontium. It's affecting my memory too. And the sinus headaches are becoming too much BUT I may just cut the dose in half. There is still a lot of evidence that doses even as low as 200 mg a day are effective. Right now I'm taking 680. We'll see. If I stay on it I will come back and post my scan results. In the meantime, take good care of yourself! We are on a terribly perrilous path! I am convinced that if pharmaceutical company R&D departments were filled with women over 60, osteoporosis would be cured by now! And the treatments wouldn't be torturous! Wishing you health and to feel much better soon!

@surah05
have you found an alterative to the strontium? I haven't opened my bottle yet....

"The recommended dose for treatment of osteoporosis is 2 g of strontium ranelate daily,"

That reads 2 g of strontium ranelate and not 2 grams of strontium. Big difference. The molecular weight of strontium ranelate is 513 while that of strontium is 87.62. The 2 g of strontium ranelate is equivalent to 340 mg Strontium.

@normahorn There are 2 Sr per molecule of strontium renelate. That would be equivalent to 680mg of Strontium.
