Severe osteoporosis at 76: Is it too late for help?

Posted by stayingalive @stayingalive, Mar 2 9:01pm

Today, my endocrinologist said it was too late to make my bones stronger. I have severe osteoporosis and have had several compression fractures in my back. I'm 76, but I'm not really ready to give up, but I don't know what to do.

@humphreysbr Thank you. I do take most of those supplements except the collagen. I'll look into that. Forteo costs $2000 a month. I have insurance that lowers the cost, but it is still financially out of reach for me.

Thank all of you again for all the great advice and comments .

@stayingalive very expensive! Some folks go to an OsteoStrong facility to strengthen their bones by workouts with a trainer designed just for osteoporosis folks to increase their bone density. I got terrible side effects from Fosomax a bisphosphonate, and decided to try weight training instead. Light weights but lots of repetitions increased my hip density 3/10ths taking me out of osteoporosis into osteopenia. This was one and 1/2 years of weight workouts. My spine increased density by one tenth. I am living proof working out can help. My doctor was very pleased and he had been pushing drugs. I refuse to take any drugs after my horrible experience. He admitted most bisphosphonates raise calcium blood levels and can upset electrolytes. I wouldn’t have started on a drug had I known that.
Check out a weight program but you should find a trainer familiar with osteoporosis.

@stayingalive by the way I am 75 and haven’t worked out for decades before I started a year and a half ago. I loved how it made me stronger, better balanced, and more flexible. I also regained an inch of my height! A bonus!

@cpog no nothing…yet. Never heard of any drugs other than reclast, fosamax and prolia from doc, and he did not like prolia. Tymlos, etc. were not discussed. Appointments in early summer for the dexa after a year in on reclast so we will see what else he wants me to do and whether I do it or not

@jozer I will probably follow the tymlos after my 2 years are up with 3 years of reclast. Tymlos builds your bone up first and then the recalst or fosamax will stregthen whatt was built up.

I cannot understand why your physician would say such a thing! I am 77 years of age and was given a broad choice of medications designed to treat osteoporosis. I also participate in a weight program designed to help my bone density. I take various vitamin supplements, as well. None of my doctors with whom I consulted even hinted or suggested that I was too old to build bone density. Fifty years ago that might have had some element of truth but not with all of our current options. Get another doctor, one who doesn't write you off due to age.

Not true. Find another endocrinologist. I am 80, starting on meds. If you live in NYC, go to HSS (Hospital for Special Surgery). I just saw Matthew Drake MD, chief of endocrinology and Osteoporosis.

Thank all of you for your supportive comments and suggestions. It appears I need a second opinion 🙂. Also, I need to be as proactive as all of you seem to be.

@gravity3 I was prescribed fosamax about a month ago but have not started it yet. Been trying to exercise every day now and eating better. Very Leary about taking the fosamax but don’t want to lose more bone density

I can relate. I too have just been diagnosed and they want me to start the drug. They do recommend I see my dentist first.

Never too late…but you will need to do some research, as OP meds are strong and not for everyone…meanwhile, a balanced diet including dairy if tolerated well… some simple exercises… consider good quality supplements, some with calcium, some not..best ones have D3and K2 , some including various levels of magnesium… some are organic,my own preference….you probably should get a DEXA scan to see where your bones are weakest, so exercise and meds focus where needed. Good luck !
