Ovarian Cancer - did anyone choose no surgery?

Surgery seems to be the standard to remove large tumors. I’m just wondering if anyone decided not to go that route?

I was actually given a choice but I was diagnosed with what is called psomammas carcinoma of the ovary which is a low grade serous cancer. It was an incidental finding when I was admitted for diverticulitis. I was asymptomatic. My GYN oncologist gave me three options 1) do nothing as I was asymptomatic 2) do nothing and monitor or 3) treat. I chose to treat.

I had surgery to remove both my ovaries and fallopian tubes as well as an omentectomy. And I’m currently doing chemo therapy.

I wanted the best chance of survival plus knowing this indolent disease was growing in side me I didn’t want to take chances that if or when I became symptomatic it would be too late.

I was advised not to have the surgery. It was thought that it was not beneficial and that I might end up worse.

I would have chosen that route if my cancer was the same.
I don't like the fact that there is cancer in my body and could be spreading.

@maghera Surgery was actually better tolerated than I thought it would be. I am currently 5 months out from surgery and my “insides” don’t feel quite normal and what I mean by that is I feel pinches, pulls, tingles, itchiness, numbness and heaviness but I had a lot of adhesions from prior c-section and multiple episodes of diverticulitis. It’s not pain per se I just know a lot of stuff was removed and my insides were manipulated. Total post op recovery was about 8 weeks before I was able to move about without concern for pain and discomfort. I wore an abdominal binder during that time as well for support and to prevent the potential for post op hernia.

I am back to light exercise but I’m also still doing chemo so my energy levels are low.

I hope the discomforts lessen over time. You probably won't feel good until you finish chemo.

Maghera, I am worried about you. Have you considered a second opinion to review your options?

Thanks, yes , I have seen 2 surgeons, talked to a colerectal surgeon and my son is an Urological Oncologist. My oncologist also agreed with my decision.
