Which Type of Biopsy?

Posted by cladav @cladav, Mar 5 5:38am

My PSA is rising, from 4 to 7 in three months. I’ve had a negative MRI but now they want to do a biopsy. The doctor I’ve been assigned (at Duke Hospital, a huge system) only does transrectal biopsies. I know the risk of infection is higher than a transperineal biopsy. Should I change docs and hold out for a TP rather than a TR? Thanks for any input.

I would highly recommend the Targeted MRI Trans-perineal Fusion Biopsy! Just had it completed at Mayo Clinic it’s the only way to do a Biopsy the right most accurate & infection free Biopsy. I had a doctor similar to yours he did it his way a random Trans-rectal biopsy and missed to target completely which could easily be seen on the MRI. I told him this before the Biopsy! He said no worries I will get it with 14 random cores all came back negative! My best advice do the one I recommend! If he won’t find a center of excellence and do it right the first time. Don’t waste time and effort on stupidity…..,, like I did!

@cole5055 the same thing happened to me 9 years ago. Rising PSA so the Dr sent me for a biopsy without an MRI. They just sample Willy Nilly I guess. Negative on cancer. Now PSA still high. Different dr says I should have a MRI. It showed a lesion. Went for a fusion biopsy. 6 were 4+3 and a 3+4. Had divinci prostatectomy last week.
