Does boric acid cause bladder pain?

Posted by blueskies1530 @blueskies1530, Feb 22 8:49am

I have IC/BPS. My gynecologist recommended it to balance my vaginal PH. I've read horror stories of it causing bladder pain in IC/BPS patients.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Bladder Conditions Support Group.

I’ve never heard of this. What is the proposed route to administer this? I would make a list of list of questions and concerns about this and ask the Dr. about them. (Or you could get a 2nd opinion.

@blueskies1530 I am pretty sure your doctor is recommending the use of boric acid as a suppository.

Here is what Cleveland Clinic has to say: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/drugs/19641-boric-acid-vaginal-suppository
It might also help with recurring UTIs but not a strong evidence of such. And if it were to do that, the bladder discomfort that comes with a UTI could be affected. Does that make sense?

@gingerw Yes, I understand he's recommending the suppositories to balance my PH. I was just wondering if any IC/BPS patients can use those suppositories comfortably. I tried them six years ago and recall pain but perhaps I used too many or tried too many different vaginal treatments at one time.

@blueskies1530 You might try checking with your doctor and ask if he has any words of wisdom, of if he has other patients in your same situation? Maybe try again but be mindful of what you're doing to not have a repeat situation of pain?

@blueskies1530

This worked great for me and balance corrected after first use. However my treatment was compounded and which usually helped not irritating bladder. And as for IC installments with sodium carbonate helped me the most, with recovery quite quickly. The oral scripts never worked with the except of Uribel.

Uribel works great for preventing UTI’s, taken daily 1 or 2 day. It keeps bladder/kidney at the right ph and discourages growth of bacteria. It does color your urine blueish.
This was once prescribed to me by urologist many years ago as Hyophen - however can’t get that now & switched to Uribel. Use discount cards to get best cash price. This is no con- I swear with continued use it will be your solution to recurrent UTI’s. Be happy! dbamos1945
