Does anyone have persistent nausea and fatigue post Lutathera?

Posted by grange @grange, Feb 4 4:29pm

My wife finished the 4 dose Lutathera treatment for NET’s about 45 days ago. She has persistent nausea and fatigue. She’s taking all the Rx anti nausea medication but not much help. Has anyone had the same experience and did you have success treating.

Fortunately my fatigue only lasted a couple of days..

@grange, I'm tagging a few additional members like @wkellett @dbamos1945 @sandy23 @susan481 @markmark007 @firepowr who have experience with Lutathera treatment. They may be able offer thoughts about persistent side effects like nausea and fatigue.

Grange, how is your wife doing now? Have things improved?

@grange: My Lutathera PRRT treatment did produce fatigue that I accepted as my time to concentrate on killing my cancer cells. I did aim to maintain my exercise routine during this 6month period, but there were days I did not feel I had the energy to do much at all. Those days I napped and vegged out on the couch.
I never had nausea. However I did eat small meals and snacks - with attention to best choices for adequate nutrition. If constipation or hard stool was a problem I added stool softeners and Metamucil to my schedule. I wanted to allow my body to move smoothly, stay healthy (I wore a mask faithfully and avoided crowded situations) and expected my body to respond well to this treatment.
I was so happy to get MRI results after my 6mo treatment ended. My body did accept the Lutathera and worked to control my NET tumors. My positivity did help my body-mind healing attitude to a successful result. All NET patients are different and so are their results. Lutathera helps control our progressing cancer tumors from growing. Tumor Control is a Big Win! It gives us more time to enjoy our life.
So, I am grateful for our brilliant Oncology Specialists and Researchers who work hard to provide us treatments. All medical procedures have side-effects, but I believe Lutathera has fewer and more tolerable effects.
Your wife may not feel her best, but help her accept this treatment as what her body needs right now. Encourage her to nap when she feels tired. You can help her by doing or getting help with household chores during this treatment. She might have to regulate her energy since her concentration is less when she feels fatigue. She needs this time to take the best care of herself!
I hope you and your wife will accept the minimal consequences of taking PRRT treatment. Your Oncology team and many peer NET patients are here to help you along the way!

You might want to check with your care team since it's been 45 days. As mentioned earlier, definitely smaller meals. Also, it is best to avoid laying down right after eating.

My partner did this treatment and just finished a month ago. Each time she had had significant fatigue - and while she is doing reasonable seems tired to me, though this may be because she had gone back to work.

My wife was admitted to the hospital a few days ago with persistent nausea, belly pain and continual vomiting. She was seen by a gastroenterologist and he performed an endoscopy. Results: Sever gastritis. Her stomach lining and esophagus is severely inflamed along with retaining excessive amounts of bile. After treatment started, she was discharged 2 days latero. I don’t understand why she wasn’t advised to see a gastroenterologist for these persistent symptoms. If anyone has the same symptoms after Lutethera therapy, see a gastroenterologist.
Second day home and she wants to eat and isn’t vomiting.

So many causes of gastritis. This winter we have been bombarded with many very contagious viruses, but these should have been addressed when your wife was hospitalized.
I believe I have was told after Lutathera NET treatment that I needed to watch my blood counts (white, red & platelets) and that if they were compromised my body would build back my natural immunities. The fatigue I can relate to slowly being replaced with energy, but be gentle with your body & nap when you are tired. By wearing masks and avoiding crowded places we need to be vigilant in germ control to avoid any infections.
If I were you and the symptoms continue I would consult with a gastroenterologist. I have not heard of these symptoms following Lutathera NET treatment.

Grange - sorry to hear about your wife’s side effects. I did my 4 rounds of PRRT a couple years ago- only experienced fatigue day or 2 after the treatments. Maintained my exercise regimen over the 8 mos of treatment. Do believe PRRT helped control the pace and spread of tumors. Stay strong- new treatment options help keep things positive ! ( I’m in year 11 of the fight- fortunate!)

Hi @whisperingpines, I'm sorry to read that the side effects of Lutathera are making it hard to function day to day. The fatigue can be debilitating.

How many treatments have you had? How are you managing?
