The Incredible Egg

I’m not sure if we talked about this during our EGG summit, but once again, a long held belief - dogma, in fact - is finally debunked.

Stay away ; ) lol for PC sake.
That dogma that eating "cholesterol" is the reason for "high" cholesterol was proven wrong long time ago, actually. Only small percent of total cholesterol in our blood comes from "diet".
I wouldn’t call it being “debunked.” It’s the nature of the scientific method that as observations are investigated, updated results occur based on the data. It’s simply the natural evolution of the evidence-based approach.
It takes time to replace an old concept with a new concept.

4 Reactions@brianjarvis I think debunked is appropriate in this case since it’s been known for quite some time that our bodies produce most of our cholesterol and diet only contributes a small amount; yet, the dietary restrictions remained in place. What is stunning to me is the almost high school simplicity of the experiment; it really makes you wonder why setting up a study with parameters SO obvious wasn’t done decades before…
So saturated fats are still in the picture, eggs are not; maybe the adage ‘what’s good for the heart is good for the prostate’ will also hold true and this hazy theory about choline in eggs causing PCa will also be put to rest.

This is hysterical, I’m vindicated!
In my post in the earlier debate about what to eat and what not to eat, I’m pretty sure I posted something about how eggs are poison one period of time then considered super food at another as an example of how little we seem to really know about nutrition.

3 Reactions@heavyphil This study had only 48 subjects that completed all three diet phases. I’m not disagreeing with the conclusions (my personal experience says they are right), but I wouldn’t draw a “general population” conclusion from this work. To me, this was a good preliminary study that provides a basis for further funding and a larger test population.
But to your point about diet and blood cholesterol, I have had high cholesterol my entire adult life. I could eat just cardboard and dried grass, and my total cholesterol and LDL would still be elevated in my withered, malnourished body. I eat occasional eggs and chicken, but am vegan most of the time. I still take a daily max dose of atorvastatin to keep my cholesterol level close to normal ranges. Diet has little impact on my cholesterol levels. Seems to be all genetic (my mom had high cholesterol, took statins, never suffered heart disease, died at 95 from “old age”).
And now I’m hankering for a egg burrito with some hatch green chile salsa...
