Loose knee implant

Posted by lmc @lmc, Jul 21, 2024

I had TKR 14 months ago and the surgery was unsuccessful. Now, I am told that the implant is loose. It slips out of position each time I move.
Has anyone had this experience? What is done to rectify this situation?

I am 81 years old. I have had both knees replaced, The right knee has been revised three times and the doctors are recommending another revision. The loosening is not a durability issue they loosen within the first 18 months or so.
The left knee lasted about two years and is loose now also. I have chronic pain, use a cane sometimes but deathly afraid of another revision. Has anyone ever heard of Such? Right knee revised by different doctors.

Have had both knees and revision on left. All unsuccessful as flex is at best 75. Did all PT, etc. Revision flex even went negative, from 80 to 43 after revision surgery! Surgeon said all he could do is scrape out scare tissue. So sorry but you will do it if gets bad enough. I would get different surgeon.

It has been over 2 years since my total knee replacement and I have had nothing but trouble with it. It has been deemed a failed surgery with pain which still wakes me up at night, swelling, and clicking or popping in and around the implant. Within the next 2 weeks, I will be seeing the knee surgeon and will BEG him to order an MRI of the knee. By the way, my original surgeon retired since the surgery and passed me along to a "fresh set of eyes" as he said before he dumped me. The popping and snapping of the joint is getting worse.

@lmc Your OEM surgeon apparently wasn't very good. Why would you trust his referral?

Go find a new revision surgeon...a great one. Someone with great experience, a great mind and great hands. If you have some doctors you trust, ask them who they use for their personal family. Even if they are in a completely different field, the medical community in most cities is not that large and they know who the great ones are and who are the ones to avoid.

Good luck!
