Hot and cold: Any tips for living with fluctuations of temperature?

Posted by asolidrock @asolidrock, Feb 27 7:40pm

Lately I've had episodes of being hot and sweating sometimes but not all the time now and in just a few minutes be cold. I'll be in the living room and have to turn the fan on then just in a few minutes turn it off.; it is really frustrating especially to my wife,although she doesn't say anything.

I don't run a mile but I do walk 4- 7 miles a couple to three x a week.

My oncologist put me on effexor but it isn't helping; what do you use if you don't mind me asking

@asolidrock my flashes are moderate so if they happen at night I just throw the blankets off. If they happen during the day (which is seldom), I grin and bear it as I wipe my neck…I know the subject of meds for hot flashes have come up before in this forum, so you may want to do a search..

@sicernon3
The wave device helped me the most at night. If your hot flushes are not really heavy then it works well during the day as well.

I mentioned that drug oxybutynin, A number of people have said it really works well to stop the hot flashes. See if your doctor can prescribe that for you.

To get the wave device, you go to Embrlabs.com. You can order it directly there it’s about $300. They have a 60 day moneyback guarantee if it doesn’t work for you.

If you do buy one, let me know right away. I will send you instructions for how to configure it the best way for day and night.. I’ve used them for over five years and worked closely with the company.

A little hand-held fan can help with the hot flushes during the day, without (potentially) annoying everyone else in the room. I have this one:

I seem a lady in church who had a small fan attached to her cell phone. It didn't seem very conspicuous.

I just started ADT (Firmagon - Dr & I wanted to use Orgovyx, but I didn't meet the criteria required for pre-authorization. That is a long story so I won't recount it here.) Looking ahead to when I DO experience hot flashes, I turned to my daughter who is currently going through them as part of menopause. She has found that a single drop, or sometimes two, of CBD oil works wonders for her (she is by no means a pothead). I have not broached the subject yet to my oncologist, but will let you kow what he has to say.

@georgemc I'm sorry to hear you're stuck on Firmagon. I had 2–3 days of flu-like symptoms after every monthly injection during the 2½ years I was on it, as well as rashes and egg-sized swelling around the injection site.

Here's hoping your monthly acute side-effects around the injection are much milder. 🤞

My husband has been going through this for a year since starting ADT, a month or so ago the Dr prescribed gabapentin to help with sleep, it didn't BUT it helped with hot flashes and his mood!
