Taking Miralax and Metamucil in the same day

Posted by docm @docmeehan, Jun 11, 2023

Hi everyone who is living with abdominal adhesions. I have been trying to learn to live with this for several months now without much help from my doctors. I'm on a very low fiber diet and take a small dose of Miralax daily on doctor's orders. I normally have two or three soft stools daily but for about the last month I have been having an episode of diarrhea once a day. this is not every day but is happening pretty frequently.

My question is can I also take Meta Mucil daily to help add bulk to my stool?

Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and good luck with your own adhesions.

I had an SBO in December of 2024. I have been taking 1 to1.5 teaspoon of olive oil a day. I stopped for a month and had an SBO again so had to do no intake for a day then liquids etc went back to my olive oil daily and I'm fine again. Sonin over a year I only had one SBO again and that's when I stopped taking the olive oil. This is just my personal experience. Everyone is different.

I have been advised by my doctor to take Restoralax (called Miralax in the States) daily, but the label states it should not be taken for longer than seven days. That concerns me - especially since it is pure propylene glycol. Isn’t that a plastic base? I have been told Citrucel also is basically “plastic”.

@rashida I was concerned about that as well. However I checked with my daughter who is a Nurse Practitioner and she said it is safe to take daily on a long term basis.

I have IMO which results in constipation and diarrhea as well but mostly constipation. In my case, I need to speed up motility so, I take Miralax and fiber to increase bulk. I take Sunfiber rather than Metamucil. Both increase bulk but the Sunfiber produces less gas but not as much bulk. My doctor initially suggested Metamucil but for me, the Sunfiber seems a bit better. Taking both Miralax and either fiber source each day is ok according to my doctor and dietitian.

@marylandbob I've started taking chia seeds and kefir - which has seemed helpful so far. Recommended by doctor. Mix 2 Tbsp chia in 1 cup kefir - stir well, let sit overnight. Eat 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup per day - start slow to see how your body handles it - and increase amount, up to 2 Tblsp per day (so one cup of the mixture). Both ingredients have lots of benefits. And natural

I have microscopic colitis and IBS. I take a daily dose of Miralax and one dose of Citrucel fiber. My GI Dr said I could even mix them together. She recommended Citrucel over Metamucil because it's less likely to produce excess gas. Citrucel is methycellulose vs the psyllium husk in Metamucil.

@ripley I want to give an update. I started taking magnesium glycinate every day, 200-300mg every night an hour before bed. It cured my constipation and I no longer need Metamucil or Citrucel.
