Increase in BP while using Evenity

Posted by dgc @dgc, Feb 2, 2025

Has anyone experienced a rise in their blood pressure while receiving Evenity injections? My BP has gone into stage 2 hypertension after 3 months, the only change in my "lifestyle" has been the injections. I get 8000-11000 steps per day, spend 20 minutes 4 days a week strength training and eat a clean homemade diet, GF, alcohol and smoke free. My MD says high BP is not a known side effect of taking the injections. My response was then why the FDA box warning regarding cardio issues.

All I can say is that I wish I had seen these posts last spring. I started Evenity in April 2025; my 10th dose is scheduled for two weeks from now. I had read all the literature about Evenity and thought it would accomplish my goal of safely building bone mass. In September, when I went for my 6th dose, the nurse checked my blood pressure before administering. It was higher than I’ve ever had in my life. Since then, I’ve been monitoring and have had 3 additional doses. So, my conversation with my doctor tomorrow will be whether it makes sense to have the last 3 doses, hoping that my BP goes back to normal. Or do we pull the plug now and consider a different treatment for osteoporosis. Thanks to all for sharing your experiences.

@aspirecreative I started a daily regime of 10mg of olmesartan. BP is back to normal. I’m scheduled for a follow up with my PCP a month after my last dose of Evenity. Fingers crossed that the elevated BP will come back down without continuing medication. It’s a bit confounding to weigh heart health v. bone health…

Hello all, I'm to see my endocrinologist today. We discussed my starting Evenity injections last October. I had the Reclast infusion prior to this and handled it well. She felt that I would benefit even more from Evenity, which sounded great until she mentioned the cardiac problems. I have read of other patients, primarily women, who were on this treatment but their T- scores were way higher than mine. I don't recall any mention of their B/P rising but I think the thread was a couple years old. When I let my endo know that I had not started the injections and had done some reading up on this medication she was pleased that I had taken the initiative to further educate myself. Actually, I was worried she might not want to see me because I hadn't started and questioned her advice. As @aspirecreative said, this decision making is a lot of pressure. I'm glad to find this group. I'm all for proactive measures but a support group is also very helpful.

Just an FYI: If any of you are taking Evenity post spinal fracture, your increased bp may be due to the fractures themselves. Pre-fracture, my bp was very low; post-fracture, it has climbed 20-30 points. I have not started Evenity yet and take no other meds. My only theories are stress from pain, reduced lung capacity due to collapsed ribs, and reduced ability to exercise. The fractures have healed, but they’ve left their mark.
Severe osteoporosis can cause structural changes in our bodies that may lead to higher bp. Just a thought. I’ll run it by my doctor tomorrow in my pre-Evenity checkup. ((I’m due to start next week. ) If he says anything enlightening, I’ll post here.

I am 67 years old and have just completed my third injection. My blood pressure has always been in the 120/60 range. On Sunday, I checked my blood pressure because I had been having a headache. My blood pressure was 198/93. I was shocked. The Evenity is the only new thing that I have been doing that is new. My provider has me monitoring my BP over the next three weeks, with medication, to see if my blood pressure lowers. I will discuss risks/benefits with the provider. I do not want high blood pressure to now be something that I have to take medication for and something else to monitor.

@fayezer thank you for sharing this. I am considering taking Evenity but have reservations because of serious heart issues in my family. I hope you find good answers to your concerns. Please keep us informed.

I would wonder about the relationship between Evenity and BP too. Keep asking questions.

@donnah29
My blood pressure shot up after 4 or 5 shot. Doctor just increased my blood pressure medication. Also at that time my acid reflux returned and I noticed a weight gain. I have two more shots. Hope things will go back to normal after this. Several people on this site have experienced higher blood pressure — not that your doctor will think it’s the medication since it isn’t mentioned as a side effect.

Finished my third Evenity round and my bp is elevated, just as it was during Tymlos injections. Very concerning. Do I take bp meds short-term? I had same comments about high bp not being side effect...🙄
