Has anyone lost weight with PMR/GCA on high dose Prednisone?
My husband was diagnosed with PMR May 2023, GCA February 2024. He lost about 10 pounds or maybe a little more between being diagnosed with PMR and GCA. Since GCA, he's continued losing even though his pain is under control and has been for a number of days. He's gotten his appetite back and I expected to see some weight gain. Yet this morning he actually lost again. He began all this weighing about 193 and is now 174. Has anyone else experience weight loss like this rather than weight gain? He thinks prednisone is ramping up his metabolism causing the weight loss. Also, when he was in terrible pain he wasn't eating well, had no appetite so the weight loss was more understandable. This new weight loss troubles me since he's eating a lot more than he was a week or so ago.

To those struggling with this disease AND weight loss, hang in there. Life is NOT fair. This is the first time I have lost weight easily in my life. I have no idea why.
I have sat down to dinner beside a man who can eat three meals to my one for the last 44 years. His metabolism is unbelievably remarkable. He has one sibling, and she can eat more than any woman I've ever met. They are both very thin.
Regarding our PMR, I feel like people highly underestimate this disease, the predisone use, and the fear of relapse. Do not degrade yourself. EVER. Other people don't know what we are going through and I for one, am thankful to have found this group.

2 ReactionsWhen my PMR started, 6/2024, I typically weighed in around 175- 180. I started prednisone at 20mg, had a few painful flares while tapering, and am now at 2mg, still with some of the usual morning PMR shoulder and back discomfort that usually abates with activity during the day. At the outset of this adventure I easily lost weight without trying, and now I’ve leveled off at 155ish. I’m 5’11” and 76 years and am still trying to be very active - biking, Pickleball, skiing, hiking and hitting the gym. I think a lot of my weight loss is from lost muscle mass. I hope to get off the Pred and perhaps start increasing reps and weight in the gym 🤞 I think we all have different experiences with PMR, and we just do the best we can with the cards we’ve been given. Good luck to you.
