I'm sorry you are having such a rough time. It's been so long ago, I don't recall such problems, but I'm sure there are people here who have shared your experience and have advice to offer. Good luck!
I'm 2 years out. But I know I used a lot of baking soda rinse that I mixed in small bottle water. I had a large plastic mug that I used as a spittoon. Lots of rinsing and spitting kept my phlegm thin and moving. Choking was an issue for me.
I opted for a g tube so eating was not an issue. My tongue/ mouth healed quickly and I had optimum nutrition.
I’m over 9 years post radiation and chemotherapy. I still deal with phlegm and dry mouth, no OTC or RX products help.
This is my daily routine:
First thing in the morning; get tap water nearly hot, as hot as I can stand it. Swish spit several times and then sip swallow, hack it up and repeat until throat is clear and then follow up with swish spit.
Then I water pic and brush my teeth with whitening paste and follow up with Sensodyne and prescription fluoride paste.
I repeat this after I eat my breakfast and a couple times throughout the day and after any meal and before bed.
This is the only thing that helps me!
As for nausea; sake your doctor to prescribe you Ondansatron, this should help you!
Hope this helps

1 ReactionI am 1 1/2 years post treatment. The nausea was the worst side effect. The thick phlem definitely added to the nausea. To help break it up I used a nebuliser a few times a day with saline water sachets that I got from the pharmacy. Hope this helps

2 ReactionsHello @kamrin . It seems that some patients have a stronger gag reflex in dealing with the thick mucous and phlegm. Asking for nausea medication to take daily may help. Thinning the mucous is the goal so everything you can do to help this should be tried. I think @mojo244 Jody describes an effective daily plan. Saline often thins secretions better than water and Neilmed sinus flush packets are an easy and economical way to make saline. They are available online or at the drugstore. Running an ultrasonic humidifier nearby 24/7 will keep the winter heated air more moist and you won't dry out as much. I have never tried prescription saliva substitute but you can ask your onco or nurse about it. The multiple rinses and gargling are unpleasant and cause gagging themselves but it is the best way to get the mucous out. This is the worst time and it slowly gets better. Hang in there.

2 ReactionsMy husband has had very thick phlegm and has found that Tussin has helped. He needs the Tussin because it’s liquid and can be administered through his G tube. If you can take meds by mouth, it’s liquid Mucinex . It thins the mucus. He also has used a suction machine to help clear it.

1 ReactionI am 2 1/2 years post treatment. Today I have very little issues so hopefully this will give you some incouragement. I believe I peaked with phlem , throat sores, etc about 3 weeks after radiation stopped. Then the slow climb back to the new normal. The thick phlem was an issue but ever so slowly faded and my salivary glands started back working .
