How to heal Gastritis / stomach inflammation?

Posted by katemu @katemu, Feb 20 9:57am

I’ve been in pain for over 6 weeks now after taking an antibiotic (doxycycline) that caused erosions in my upper GI tract.
The pain persists and I just had an upper endoscopy done 2 days ago. Doctor said esophagus and first part of small intestine look ok but my stomach is inflamed (gastritis).
I’ve been on 40mg famotidine morning and night for 6 weeks along with sucralfate which is supposed to coat the lining of my stomach.
I’m just not noticing any improvement and its still inflamed after 6 weeks.

Did you try omeprazole 20mg (Prilosec OTC or prescription Rx, lot cheaper) , once or twice daily, 1 hour before meals? I have been on it for 1 week and it has helped my gastritis symptoms. Good luck.

Hi, @katemu

I feel your pain! I was nervous to start but I am finding relief taking a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces stomach acid and promotes healing. I believe my primary care doctor that prescribed this medication told me famotidine is another option for me preferred trying the PPI first.

Here is a summary from Mayo Clinic if you haven’t seen it. Once you click the link and scroll down you will find a section, “Treatment” addressing your question.

I was on a PPI but I get horribly itchy skin from it so I must be allergic.
Good luck to you. It is painful at times.
