Hearing Loss after MVD surgery

I had surgery in December 2016 by Dr Stieg at Weil Cornell in NYC and am now totally deaf in my right ear. Challenges are hearing when there is background noise and knowing where sound comes from. I do have excellent hearing in my good ear so when there is no background noise I don’t even notice an issue. The spasms did stop after the surgery. I have some weakness on the right side of my face that ‘s noticeable mostly to me and doctors but also something I wasn’t expecting. When I had my surgery I didn’t appreciate the risk of hearing loss even though I knew it was a risk. For some reason I thought if I had hearing loss it could be managed with a hearing aid and that is not the case. If I could go back I would have done more research on the risks and best surgeons foe this type surgery. It sounds like you are doing your research. Best of luck to you.

@kcjc9 My surgeon was Dr Field at Advent Health in Orlando. He is the head of the neurosurgery Dept there so I thought I was getting the best of the best. Of they tell you there is a less than 1% chance of hearing loss, so you really don't expect to lose your hearing from the surgery. When I asked him what happened, he said "Well, I guess you're just part of the 1%". No explanation. I do have the "cros" hearing aids whwere my deaf ear aid transmit sound from the left into my good ear aid. That way I can still hear someone sitting on my left side. The most frustation comes from not knowing what direction sound or voices is coming from. My phone could be on my left (deaf) side and I'll be looking for it on my right side. Someone can call my name and I don't know where to look. I guess this is the price to pay to eliminate the facial spasms & disfigurement.
