Chronic Back Pain for Years

Posted by jlfisher56 @jlfisher56, May 2, 2017

6 back surgeries (extensive cervical and lumbar fusions) with neurological complications. Left with chronic pain. Accident happened in Nursing career 1992 and worked with first fusions until 1999 (failed fusions). At my age, and as a former nurse educator, I never wanted to had to rely on medication/s for the severe pain. Having thoroughly exhausted exploring sites using non-pharmaceutical methods, using psychological methods, biofeedback, trying to accept my limitations, i.e., I still believe somewhere...out there...is hope. The strong medicine has caused gastroparesis, further complicating my health problems. They are too numerous to write and I will not focus on them. I am looking for "help" and guidance. If I can be of assistance to anyone throughout their trials, (perhaps similar to some of what I have gone through), I will.

@pfbacon, @qball2019, Greetings from MN. I am sending you this link because I think you said you lived in Delaware. Here is an advanced myofascial release (MFR) therapist in Newark. https://www.mfrtherapists.com/app/listings/therapist/?ID=1351. I cannot possibly convey to you the advantages of receiving MFR therapy every week. I think I am alive and feeling hopeful because of my weekly treatment. And you are right.....after a day or two of surprising relief, I can tell that some of the fascia restrictions are beginning to pop up in different places. Now that I have progressed in my understanding of the technique, I find that I can do some of the procedures myself. My therapist also invited my life partner to come and participate. He now helps keep me flexible and without sizable fascia restrictions. And before I forget, let me ask @jenniferhunter to relay her MFR experience for you.

I also use 4 inch balls to keep my body aligned and a Cranio Cradle to make sure the nerves leaving my head/neck area are headed in the right direction. Be safe and please enjoy a pain free hour or even a whole day. Chris

I just googled it. It kind of sounds like slow massage of specific places, not muscles, I'm not sure where but I'll find out. There is a place that does MFR 1/2 a mile from me (I'm in Bethany Beach, Delaware). I said I would try anything, I will try it. I'll call them tomorrow - I'll let you know how it goes. I've been a guinea pig in more difficult situations than getting a massage ... Peggy

Yes - I try to remember to get a massage once a month but it ends up being about once every 6 months. It too, helps while I'm there, but as soon as I go home, the effect is worn off and I'm on fire again. I give up and take the capsules. Peggy

@pfbacon I hear you on the massage. Really the best thing to do is find a massage therapist that also does myofascial release. It's amazing and really helps.

@pfbacon The fascia is like the silver skin on red meat. It encases all of our organs. When any kind of trauma happens it can tighten up. This is different that muscles/massage. You first need to get the fascia to release before you can start stretches and more vigorous activities. You will be sore afterward. I know I am whether it's MFR or massage. Try using a heating pad, sitting in a hot tub, or just a hot bath. Will be waiting to hear how your appt. goes. Best of luck to you.

@pfbacon, @qball2019, @lioness, @jenniferhunter Just sending this to @pfbacon because of the Delaware connection but wanted to include all of you. Not all Expert John Barnes MFR therapists are listed on the website. My MFR therapist just told me that Mark Thompson is in Rehobeth Beach at One Spirit Massage Studio. The website is onespiritmassage.com. That's just a stone's throw from Bethany Beach. She knows him personally and highly recommends him. If anyone wants to find out if there is an MFR therapist near you...I am happy to do the research....just let me know the area. Have a restful sleep. Good night. Chris

@artscaping @lioness Thanks, Chris! I'm sure that information will help someone. Yes, not all Myofascial Release therapists are listed on the website. They have to pay for that listing. My MFR therapist recommends that if you don't find someone, you can call Therapy on the Rocks in Sedona, AZ. This is John Barnes' clinic and he is teaching his methods and certifying the therapists in MFR work. They have advanced courses for therapists that specialize in different areas and sometimes workshops for the public. For anyone new to this discussion the website is https://www.myofascialrelease.com/ . We also have a discussion on MFR here on connect with more information. That link is https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/myofascial-release-therapy-mfr-for-treating-compression-and-pain/
