Chronic Back Pain for Years
6 back surgeries (extensive cervical and lumbar fusions) with neurological complications. Left with chronic pain. Accident happened in Nursing career 1992 and worked with first fusions until 1999 (failed fusions). At my age, and as a former nurse educator, I never wanted to had to rely on medication/s for the severe pain. Having thoroughly exhausted exploring sites using non-pharmaceutical methods, using psychological methods, biofeedback, trying to accept my limitations, i.e., I still believe somewhere...out there...is hope. The strong medicine has caused gastroparesis, further complicating my health problems. They are too numerous to write and I will not focus on them. I am looking for "help" and guidance. If I can be of assistance to anyone throughout their trials, (perhaps similar to some of what I have gone through), I will.

@grandmar You have a very difficult decision to make if surgery is suggested. It's great that you are feeling so much better but if you have neuropathy that is causing you to fall, that is of course a big problem.
Best case scenario of course is PT if that will give you the help you need. I will be thinking of you and hoping that will be the case.

Thank you!

Thank you for your thoughts. I have been through PT with bith surgeries but I have never heard the term 'dry needling'. Would you mind explaining it to me?
Ronnie
@grandmar I know very little about dry needling, but for me it is similar to acupuncture, but goes deeper and works on scar tissue and nerve endings. The needles are hooked up to a machine similar to a tens unit and the "power" is adjusted by the therapist according to your pain level tolerance.
Thank you for the information,
Hi ,my name is bre316, I've had to surgeries on my back microdisectomy and lumbar fusion a rod imlpanted . I am in so much pain I wish I hadn't got the surgeries my PCP will only give me tramadol and muscle relaxers.I've had the injections that didn't work I don't know what to do
Find a pain clinic that will give a "Pain Pump". 2 to 4 mgs. of Dilaudid per day will take care of you. You won't be pain free but you'll be ok. Search this website for wsh66. I have written extensively about my experience with the pump. It is what you need. Relief without the side affects of oral meds.
@bre316 Consider adding a pain management specialist (preferably one who also has an anesthesia background) and an integrative pain specialist to your panel of doctors. Ask each of them to call each other and agree to work together on your care. My integrative pain specialist prescribes oxytocin troches and ketamine troches (they work together) for me and they are the best pain relief I've had in 15 years! They dissolve under your tongue. You may also want to talk to your doctors about ketamine infusions. There are also several other infusion options. Good luck & take care!
Do the oxy and keta make you sleepy? Peggy
@pfbacon At first the oxytocin and ketamine made me sleepy but after I got used to them I no longer have a problem.
