Chronic Back Pain for Years

Posted by jlfisher56 @jlfisher56, May 2, 2017

6 back surgeries (extensive cervical and lumbar fusions) with neurological complications. Left with chronic pain. Accident happened in Nursing career 1992 and worked with first fusions until 1999 (failed fusions). At my age, and as a former nurse educator, I never wanted to had to rely on medication/s for the severe pain. Having thoroughly exhausted exploring sites using non-pharmaceutical methods, using psychological methods, biofeedback, trying to accept my limitations, i.e., I still believe somewhere...out there...is hope. The strong medicine has caused gastroparesis, further complicating my health problems. They are too numerous to write and I will not focus on them. I am looking for "help" and guidance. If I can be of assistance to anyone throughout their trials, (perhaps similar to some of what I have gone through), I will.

That's what they put in my back and neck. Did nothing to help me. Now they want to burn netve endings off. I guess they grow back

@oregongirl We discussed burning the nerve endings and did a trial. We found out that it did not work for me. Nerves do grow back, but slowly. When I was in the midst of my back pain I would have done anything to get away from the pain. I hope you find some reliev soon.

My feelings about the medical field has never been lower. Nothing they have done ever works. It's an attempt to make you better without pain killers. I am trying to learn to live with pain. Use my cain and rest. I feel better with my own care than a doctor. I move into Independent housing in 3 weeks. Rest, and no work. Walks, paint and explore the world around me until the Lord in His Mercy, takes me home. Praise God.

Good Morning,
I've had radio frequency ablation (burning of nerve endings).
For some people it is very successful.
For me, it didn't work at all!
I had it done a couple of times on my facett joints and twice on my cervical spine.
Sadly, it just didn't do the job.
And yes, the nerves do grow back.
How quickly they grow depends on each individual.
There are many options that you can try that might help.
Good Luck!

Good Morning,
Your story sounds very similar to mine.
I also had BAD pain in both my legs but worse in my left.
I also had BAD pain that turned out to be coming from my neck AND back.
With me, I was being woken up with violent headaches every day.
I tried shots and radio frequency ablation (burning nerves).
These things did not help at all.
After getting shots for over 5 years in my lower back, those stopped working, too.
I decided to go see a neuro-surgeon.
I did not want an ortho-surgeon to work on my spine and close to my brain.
The surgeon said the neck (cervical spine) was worse and we should take care of that, too.
At the end of February, I had C4/5 replaced with an artificial disc.
The headaches went away, but the pain in my shoulder and arm.
One week ago today, I had surgery on my lumbar spine (L3/4).
I think the pain I had prior to the surgery is almost gone, but I have new pain due to the surgery
This kind of surgery impacts the nerves and all can be temporary.
However, the pain in my arm is doing better.
This surprises me. But I'll take it.
I have to admit that the first surgery on my cervical spine healed much better and did not give me the kind of pain this surgery is giving me.
I don't like surgery, no one does, but if it clears up the acute pain, I'll live with the surgical pain.

Good luck!
Hope y ou have a pain free day!

@oregongirl Sorry to butt into your conversation, but your comment hit's home here as well. Our local insurance based medical community just wants to dispense drugs to treat symptoms. They are discouraged to do research on behalf of their patients, and we are left chronically ill unless we take matters into our own hands. There are other disciplines, but I just wanted to mention the one I found and trust. I have to pay out of pocket for her services, but she is very reasonable because she cares and is in it to help people recover. That is a MD who has completed the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition accreditation. There are other service providers with a FDN title, but it's better having an actual MD who can prescribe medicines when necessary. This doctor knows the human system and is data driven by unique tests that she knows how to read and correlate with your past medical test, and all tests that she/he may ask for. And, this wasn't a 20 minute appointment. They will spend an hour or how ever how long they need to get the information to or from you. I tell you in the two hour data dump at the end, with all the issues she found, and explaining how they all work together, and the game plan, that has to be fluid, because they do work together, etc., etc.. I mean, I'm a very complicated case. I messed myself up. I've got 6 current doctors and my PCP actually puts her hands in the air and says, "This is beyond my expertise", but in the last two years I've been with this FDN doctor I've grown stamina, and my day to day pain level has less jumps into the 8s or 9s, and my Fog has lifted substantially. The triggers are still there, and when they happen, nothing matters, no drug is going to stop the pain, but I do believe after I come out of that hell, I recover faster. I can't put a price tag on that. It may take me 3 or 5 more years to work myself out of this, but I think there is a path out of this. Maybe I've been lucky, but that's who I would look for if I needed a doctor and was willing to go outside your network.
