Botox for Overactive Bladder

Posted by slr123 @slr123, Mar 11, 2025

I had Botox bladder injections for Overactive Bladder (OAB) four months ago. It has worked phenomenally well. The beneficial effects seem to be slowly wearing off. I have an Interstim which no longer helps. Medications have had significant side effects. Has anyone experience with bladder Botox and if so how long do the effects last and how quickly do the OAB symptoms return?

Hopefully, you will find bladder Botox to be effective. I have. It has been the most remarkably effective form of therapy for my condition. It's not perfect but nothing else has even come close. My urine frequency, urgency and incontinence are markedly improved.
I have been fortunate to have been referred to an Urology specialist who has been an advocate for its use and performs it frequently. I am on a six month schedule. I was impressed that she (my Urologist) had extensive experience and a well defined way of approaching bladder Botox.
Your comment regarding the reluctance of your providers to remove the Interstim is interesting. I am hoping to have mine removed. My Urologist told me that she does not place or remove Interstims but that she had colleagues that do. My understanding was that they would schedule the removal of my Interstim separately from the next Botox injection. It has yet to be scheduled but I'm hoping it will be done.
My sense is that bladder Botox injections are being performed more frequently. I don't think the technique is particularly challenging for a Urologist to do. I hope that if it is done more frequently it is done by Urologists who are experienced and use it appropriately and that more patients who haven't found relief by other means are helped.

@slr123 Thank you for your positive comments regarding Botox. I had to reschedule my Urodynamic study and cystoscopy because I had the respiratory virus that everyone seems to be getting this year 😟. I have the study scheduled next Friday and the cysto the following week.
I have chosen not to have the Interstim device removed. I turned it off over a year ago and am having no discomfort from it so with the advice from my Urologist I elected not to have the surgery to remove it.
