Oxybutynin superior to placebo in reducing ADT-associated hot flashes
I was reading some unrelated articles and discovered this one and remembered that many members have trouble with "hot flashes", so I am posting this link in case anybody wishes to read about those new findings :

Oxybutynin is one solution. I got depo-provera Shots every three months and they really stopped my hot flashes until I went on Zytiga. Still helped, but not as much.
And then there are the recommendations by the Mayo Clinic doctors. This week’s monthly meeting produced this slide of information about different drugs that work to stop hot flashes

Interesting that they did not include that in that slide ?!
It could possibly also help as contra balance to testosterone ( ? ) Would it be possible for you to get estradiol (estrogen) patch since it will lower testosterone and also control hot flashes (as per some Euro studies already mentioned here on the forum ) ?
@surftohealth88
Yes, it is interesting that depo-provera Is seldom mentioned. It is not a hormone that causes breast enlargement in men. It works for three straight months, But you do have to get the injection.
The first time I got the shot, I walked into the place they give it and the room was filled with pictures of women and treatments for women. They actually got a security person to walk me from the room, I had no idea they didn’t want to give me the shot.. They didn’t even say anything about it, guess they had never had a man come in before. My oncologist and urologist arranged for a nurse to inject me in a different building.

4 ReactionsOxybutynin is a medication primarily used to treat overactive bladder symptoms, such as frequent or urgent urination and incontinence. As an anticholinergic agent, it works by relaxing the bladder muscles, but it can cause side effects related to reduced acetylcholine activity, which are often summarized as "can't see, can't pee, can't spit, and can't poop".
Common Side Effects
Dry mouth: The most common side effect, affecting up to 70% of users.
Dizziness and drowsiness: Frequently reported, particularly in older adults.
Constipation: A common issue resulting from slowed bowel motility.
Dry eyes and blurred vision: May make contact lenses uncomfortable.
Headache.
Dry skin or nasal dryness.
Skin reactions: Redness, itching, or irritation at the application site (for skin patch/gel forms).
Serious Side Effects (Call a Doctor Immediately)
Severe dizziness or fainting.
Urinary retention: Inability to empty the bladder, characterized by pain or difficulty urinating.
I dunno..sounds like a hard pass for me..but I want to do something before summer months cause the night hot flashes are the worst..I only have another 1 1/2 yrs of ADT to go- if all goes well...

Yes, unfortunately all medications can have side effects : (. It is always a very tough call in general. *sigh
I am a poster child for having reaction to most meds, that is why I do not use any. Luckily I do not really need medications except a thyroid hormone and in a tiny amount.
I had occasional hot flashes during night for years when I was going through pre menopause AND menopause and I just tried to "ignore them" XP. I mean, I did what I needed to do to make myself comfortable but I took them in stride, like one takes bad weather or bad traffic. Not pleasant but they are not there 24/7 so one just trys not to think about them. I had clean PJ ready and placed by my bed and would just do a quick change if I woke up sweated and than would continue snoozing XP. During the day I literary "ignored them". Heat comes as a wave, and than goes away ... If one trains oneself that it is OK and nothing to write home about they really become "background noise".
AC was a must tough and permanently set on 65 F. My poor husband slept in flannel PJ in the middle of summer and had an extra blanket on his side, ha ha. I had so much other stuff to deal with that menopause and "heat" just "flew over my head" *wooshhhh

2 Reactions@surftohealth88 yes..I do about the same..more of a nuisance and lately, the hot flashes have been less intense...tolerable...same with whole ADT regimen ( Orgovyx/Nubeqa) ..fatigue, slight mood depression and hot flashes...so far nothing I cant tolerate a while longer.
The first 30 days were the toughest..but this 'therapy' seems to have a dramatic and durable effect on cancer suppression. ( I also had 45 IMRT sessions finishing in early Dec so may still be dealing with some of that side effect as well)
my PSA was 61 at start and was < .02 at 3 months and < .01 at 5 1/2 months..doctors seemed very pleased at rapid drop..so far..next PSA check in 1 month.

The first few years on ADT my hot flashes were not something you could ignore.
My head would get completely wet, and the sweat would start dripping down into my eyes. My chest would be wet as well as under my arms. Sweat would start dripping onto my glasses making it necessary to dry them off
At night, I would wake up with the sheet completely soaked under me. Not something you can really just ignore. I Have heard women have them this bad sometimes too.
When the Embrlabs.com Wave device came out it solved the night sweats problem for me.

Oh yes, for some people hot flashes involve excessive perspiration even during the day : (((. I have unusually small number of sweat glands and I am lucky in that regard . I never sweat anywhere but under arms no matter how much I exercise or how hot it gets , even my feet are totally dry. During night my hot flashes caused me getting drenched though since all that heat would get trapped under the cover and I would end up being is some kind of "makeshift sauna" @_@ Yes, my linens were wet too, I would just lay back on the edge of a bed (a dry part) till morning since otherwise I would have to wake my husband to change sheets.
BUT, I am sure that my husband will have hot flashes like you since he sweats easily and when exercising his head and face get wet immediately. If he did not wear headband when playing tennis I think he would not be able to see anything due to waterfalls of sweat over his face XP. All that said , sweating is actually very healthy and cleans all toxins out from the body so maybe there is some benefit to that : ). I am so glad that you found solution for your hot flashes < 3, and thanks for sharing about Embrlabs and Provera tip too ! : ))

Thanks so much for sharing your ADT and radiation success and experience < 3, it is very encouraging to me to know that new protocols and new medications give such great results : ))) ! My husband is high risk patient and I am aware that he might need all of that in the future.
I am so happy to hear that most of the side effects are now lessening for you : ).
May that < 0.1 PSA stay that way forever !!! < 3
