Gohkale Method

Posted by willow5 @willow5, May 6, 2025

Hi, who has gone through the Gohkale method, and is it worth my time. There is a six session (90 minutes each) starting soon near me, it’s usually 90 minutes away. Has it helped with stenosis, scoliosis, general lower back tightness? It is not inexpensive, and I’d hate to jump into something that …. Well, you all know. Thank you!

What was the condition of your spine ? I have a disc that is completely worn away between L 4-5 causing me various symptoms including twitching in my legs if I walk more than 10 minutes or so as well as pain down my right thigh and around my knee. I've had two private sessions and admittedly haven't practiced the Stretch sitting enough, but the Stretch lying seemed to make my pain worse. Any ideas ?

My stenosis is severe at L4/5 but I still have discs. I’m not a doctor so I can’t evaluate whatever discs may remain for you, but minimizing the spinal curve should at least spread out the weight on whatever is left. I use firm wedge cushions on chairs and auto bucket seats.

MayoConnect about Esther Gokhale's posture exercises?

I’d ask questions at a monthly free Zoom chat. Esther or another teacher might be able to explain and suggest modifications to try.

You may or may not need all the workshops if you can get what you need from her book, Eight Steps to a Pain Free Back, available through Amazon. Good luck.

Every month she has free one hour zoom sessions; the two I listened to were very helpful . How to glide walk & how to stand, sit & lean over. Get on her mailing list…….

@sue4 oh! could you please let me know how to get onto her mailing list? I bought her book but it's hard to follow and I think a zoom sessions would really help. Thank you!

I have severe L4/5 spinal stenosis and was having crippling sciatica pains. I did a daylong Gokhale workshop and began following the method. No sciatica pains for a few years now.

@sbcarcht Which of her techniques helped the most? I bought her book and would like to do the chair technique, but none of my chairs have a low back such that I can traction myself. Let me know if you have any helpful tips in that. Thanks!

@ccchang Using firm wedge cushions on chairs and auto bucket seats is very helpful to avoid tucking hips.
