As you have all posted in Mayo Connect's Mental Health Group, I wanted to invite you to join in a program by Dr. Amit Sood, entitled Happiness a One Week Journey. Probably many of you are familiar with Dr. Amit Sood, a psychiatrist at Mayo. This is a free online program that addresses the issue of happiness. Here is what Dr. Sood says about this program.

Dear friends,

You and I face one common enemy – suffering. Pain, physical or emotional, when it becomes unbearable, is experienced as suffering. Pain is unavoidable, but suffering is optional. My goal is to help you find a path so you can bypass suffering in this life. One reward of traversing that journey is finding greater happiness.

Happiness is a habit. Some of us are innately happy. But most others have to choose. We often, however, don’t realize we have that choice. We also don’t know how to exercise that choice. As a result, we push happiness away. Let that not happen to you.

Join me, if you wish, to spend the next week of your life, choosing greater happiness. Each day, you’ll be guided to a practice that can make you happier. To enroll, you’ll need to register with your name and email address to connect with us for the next week. Select ‘Happiness: A One Week Journey,’ below for more information.

Take care.
Amit

Thank you for that information!! Well...sometimes a group of words can just spin a person around and something in life just seem to make a bit more sense:
"Pain is unavoidable, but suffering is optional."

Thank you. OK I'm in. Yesterday I did try to get screened to be living donor for kidney. Thought it would be good for gratitude to give kidney. But they would not accept me because of type 2 diabetes history. Even if not on meds. And even if not currently diabetic. Bummer. But I will sign up for this to see what doc has to say.

Teresa- it's JJames, do you know about the sleeping issues of the morning time. every morning I can't move very well with the Parkinson's and it hurts to force myself to get up- and I can give my self permission to sleep- I'm at a lost- I know my DR said that will happen as the stages process( I'm already in stage 3- because of the agent orange- so they say? I know and cam feel my body changing at a rapid pace and the side affect show up more often- as again I have been told by the VA Parkinson's DR- the chemicals would speed up the process. Love to hear you wisdom and advice. JJAMES>

@johnjames Thanks for your post, JJames. Yes, stiffness and pain make it difficult to get up. Do you take any of your PD medicines at bedtime or do you have your meds by your bedside so that you can take them when you first wake up? Sometimes a small night time dose is helpful for getting up without as much stiffness and pain. Also, if you can comfortably get into a hot shower, that will help as well. I one time read the Michael J. Fox takes a very long hot shower first thing in the morning in order to relieve the pain and stiffness. These are some ideas, I'll try and do some research on the Michael J. Fox website and see if I can come up with something else. Until then, best wishes and blessings to you and your wife. Teresa

@ihatediabetes How kind of you to want to "give back" as a kidney donor. I can understand the medical team's reluctance to accept you, but BRAVO for trying!! Teresa

Teresa, I was disappointed. But I can imagine that they don't want to take kidney from someone who has type 2 diabetes even if I get my glucose back to normal range with healthy living program. I actually didn't think it was a big deal. But then I was reading that a lot of people that need kidney tranplants have diabetes. Yikes. I thought I was supposed to worry about my eyes and feet. I didn't know I was supposed to worry about my kidneys too! They didn't tell me that. Anyway I do plan to donate blood tomorrow. I am also thinking of sending in monthly checks for research. I get mailings for donations for research. I am thinking of becoming a monthly supporter. So far I have been supporting churches, missions, and ministries. But Mayo clinic research seems like a ministry too. Btw I don't know if I should even bother to sign up as organ donor. I read only 5% of people actually can donate organs. It's not like people aren't trying. The truth is their organs aren't in good enough shape for transplant. I think diabetes might knock out almost everything useful. So I don't see point of having my family go through this.

@ihatediabetes Yes, I'm sure that having diabetes does take away from you the opportunities to donate organs, etc. Donating to Mayo is a great idea, though. You are very thoughtful! Teresa
