Thank you. OK I'm in. Yesterday I did try to get screened to be living donor for kidney. Thought it would be good for gratitude to give kidney. But they would not accept me because of type 2 diabetes history. Even if not on meds. And even if not currently diabetic. Bummer. But I will sign up for this to see what doc has to say.

I was wondering why there are so many places to register as donor. I was wondering why there's registerme website when I can register for Minnesota on drivers license. Why would I want my organs to leave Minnesota when I live here. Is it because people might move? If I move couldn't I put donor on new license?

@ihatediabetes, This is an excellent question!
All of the places to sign-up are part of the national organ donor registry. So no matter where you are living, they all go to the same national directory of potential donors.
In my state of Kentucky, we used to sign our drivers licenses. But that was completely ineffective because people do not always have a drivers license with them. Now we can register when we apply for driver license, or we can register thru any of the sources that you refer to.
One important thing that I was trained to ask potential donor at registry events is: Please discuss this with your family. Let them know of your decision. That way, at the time of your death, they will know of your wishes.

@hopeful33250 When I was young and working for Blue Cross in Boston, they had the best incentives. You got the afternoon off to go across town to the Red Cross to donate blood, and then they also gave you an extra half day of vacation! I gave blood every two months, the most you could donate, so got there extra vacation days a year!
I must admit, being young, at that time my incentives were not entirely altruistic.

At Mayo blood donor program you have to wait 84 days to donate. It's like 4 weeks longer than red cross. I'm actually glad about that because they say they don't want to adverse affect health of donors.

@contentandwell Good things happened with incentives and that is what's important. It is too bad that more incentives aren't offered today for blood donors and organ donors. Teresa

@ihatediabetes That is a good plan. Thanks for sharing Mayo's time line for blood donation. Teresa
