Body itching

Posted by Retired teacher @specialteacher, Jul 31, 2018

I’ve had almost unbearable itching for over 3 months. Was prescribed hydroxyzine, but it doesn’t seem to help. It started when I was in the ER having a very frightening allergic reaction. I was given an epinephrine iv, and a breathing treatment. My legs started to shake uncontrollably. Then I couldn’t breathe, was given an injection of something at that point. I’m taking benadryl and paxil but don’t know how much longer I can deal with this.

Get your liver checked out. I had a terrible experience with my liver enzymes and they ordered a hepatic lab test to check my bilirubin, ALT and AST for determining my liver function.

I explained my situation a few days ago so won’t go back into it.
Other than to let you know, it caused severe itching, light colored, stools, yellow eyes, and nausea.
Xyzal was a prescription for itching and what a huge relief.
My suggestion is get a hepatic lab test just to make sure your liver is not under attack and then go from there, but have your doctor in the meantime prescribe you Xyzal!!!

Thank you so much for this info. The derm biopsied 2 spots one was eczema the other foliculitis. I think it would have indicated scabies so I'm not too concerned. I was on prednisone before this started and I dont want anymore of that.
I will research some other derms and see what they say.

A biopsy is an insensitive test for scabies as told to me by Pathologist. You need a skin scraping done on multiple areas of your body. If you have crusted or Norweigan scabies the CDC recommends application of Permethrin cream head to toe as well as Ivermectin oral tablets. Patients taking Prednisone are more susceptible to scabies

Ask to see a copy of the results. Did your Dermatologist mention your clinical history on the biopsy requisition. The Dermatologist should be mentioning your are on oral steroids and did the Dermatologist ask the pathologists to look for scabies. Scabies can cause foliculitis.

I've been itching for 3 year's I take the hydroxyzine and I just deal with it

@liz7229 Try using Permethrin cream . If it stops the itching you may have scabies and you need proper treatment from a doctor. In Canada Permethrin cream is sold over the counter under the name of NIX Cream for about $20.00. If you are in the USA you may need to get an RX from a doctor.

Just about the time when I think it is under control. It breaks out again. I hate it. They say NOT to take hot showers and use Dove soap. I have yet to give into the cold showers. Sorry. I guess I will die with this. The doctor keeps filling my script.

@Hello.oregongirl. I suffer from the same thing. I am 73 and have found all the products the doctor has given me totally hopeless. I just react to them So after a lot of research I have gone totally natural and alternative and my skin is much better. So these are my tips.....
Bathe every 2-3 days 10-15 minutes in warm water with colloidal oatmeal..
Pat dry I then use a combination of any of.....
Nettle
Vera gel
Probiotic skin barrier body balm (hypoallegenic and vegan)
Internally I take......
Pure slippery elm in capsule form
Allevia Hives (antihistamin)
Wear only cotton next to your skin and give each product time ....10mins or so....to work before despairing. This should give relief for about 6-8 hours then I reapply creams.
These have helped me very much. I do know how agonising it is and wish you luck

I was given Triacinalone cream for a rash that developed from immune therapy. It was all over my body and was extremely itchy. It helped to relieve the itch and take away the rash but I had to use it 2 x a day for 2 weeks then lay off for a week. It came back. So I started again. Will see if it goes away.

I was diagnosed with Primary Biliary Cholangitis, a liver bile duct disease. I was itching so bad, all over, and nothing topical worked. Found out my bile was getting into my bloodstream, thus the incredible, untouchable itching. I’m on Ursodial for it. Please get a hepatic function panel done to check your liver.

You could try doxepin. It’s an older antidepressant that they’ve found that works pretty well for itching.
